Stanford shouldn’t be counting any chickens when they recently dropped sets to Oregon State, Arizona State, and Utah. And went five with a Sky-less USC. Will they/should they win? Probably. But let’s not act like they haven’t shown vulnerability It seems like they were sleeping walking through those games. At USC in particular, they began with such low energy, like they weren’t motivated. I would *hope* that’s not the case for the tournament, especially with maybe a harder than expected first round opponent. Having Francis back, as much for her fire as for her vball skillz, would help. Fingers crossed on that front.

I'd say this is unfair to Pepperdine too, even if they were one of the last at-larges. There's a lot of 6-8 seeds I think they could beat. It's way more unfair to Pepperdine.

But let’s not act like they haven’t shown vulnerability Who's counting chickens? Who's acting like they haven't shown vulnerability? Maybe that was a bit harsh, but there’s an abundance of confidence going on around. For what it’s worth, I think Stanford was handed a raw deal with this match up. Like another poster said, I’ve just seen them sleep walk through wins and drop sets they shouldn’t. Won’t be able to do that here.

I'll go farther. It would be a complete embarrassment for Stanford to lose this match. That said, if it goes 4 or 5 sets I don't think that's any reason for alarm. Just need to win. How it looks doesn't matter. That second round is no picnic compared to other #1 seeds, either. Hawaii in particular is a scary opponent for a #1 seed in the second round. I'd like to see Francis return sooner rather than later as long as she's healthy. It would be worse in my opinion to rush her and risk a setback than to make sure she's as healthy as possible before returning to the court, but obviously time is at a premium. If Ahrens was still there, Pepperdine might have a shot. But without her, this should be a Stanford sweep. Maybe 3-1. What happened to her? I know she was on the team earlier in the season when they got some signature wins, but they haven't been as strong without her. Stanford should sweep, unless they start slow, then maybe they will lose a set.

I'd expect a Stanford win. But, it's criminal that Stanford has to face Pepperdine on day one. Yes for sure. No idea why they didn't just have Pepperdine play Hawaii which would have been about what you'd expect for the 8 seed. Yes, I would have felt better facing LSU in first round, and let Hawaii play Pepperdine.

Yes, I would have felt better facing LSU in first round, and let Hawaii play Pepperdine. LSU is gonna win this subregional! The selection committee's incompetence has rattled you! But I appreciate the levity.

Ha ha I could see them really challenging if first-half-of-the-season Dotson shows up. Not with second-half Dotson. And what happened to OPP Hannah Jacobs? She started off strong too, but I don't think she starts anymore. Having said that, I think if Good Caitie shows up for Stanford they'll be ok. And hopefully humming along nicely when they meet up with USD. They can't be tentative against USD. They ain't gonna cut it.

Elena Oglivie, Stanford want to make things right By Jason Kaneshiro 12/2/22, Honolulu Star-Advertiser AL CHANG / STANFORD ATHLETICS Elena Oglivie is the supreme libero in the Pac 12.STANFORD, Calif. >> The chilly rain sweeping through town on Thursday caught Elena Oglivie by surprise. Even so, the task of trying to stay dry on a gloomy day in Palo Alto beats an early December trip to Minnesota. “Minnesota was so cold, and the snow, it’s not for me,” Oglivie, an ‘Iolani alumna, said of Stanford’s assignment for the opening rounds of the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament a year ago. That trip, which ended with a quick second-round loss to the host Gophers, provided fire for the Cardinal when the calendar turned. After winning back-to-back national championships in 2018 and ’19, Stanford went 2-8 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. After finishing 19-11 last year, the Cardinal reclaimed a place among the nation’s elite this season in winning the Pac-12 title and earning one of the four No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament. “Losing to Minnesota, getting swept, not playing our best, really motivated all of us who were on that team to put more work in and know what we need to do to perform at that level,” Oglivie said after Stanford’s practice in Maples Pavilion in preparation for today’s first-round match with Pepperdine. A former All-State Player of the Year as an ‘Iolani outside hitter, Oglivie made the transition to a full-time role in the back row when she began her college career in 2020. Her personal progress tracked along with the team’s collective climb and she was named the Pac 12 Libero of the Year earlier this week. “Elena’s developed into being not a good libero, but a great libero,” Stanford coach Kevin Hambly said. “(She’s) more assertive vocally and more assertive as a player; just looking to make plays, looking to clean things up. just taking charge of the defense. She’s just what a libero should be.” Oglivie topped the Pac-12 with 4.35 digs per set to help the Cardinal hold opponents to a league-best .198 hitting percentage while handling the first contact for a Stanford attack hitting .292. She posted more than 20 digs in seven matches with a career-high 28 against Oregon State last week in the conference title clincher. Oglivie has looked to expand her range in the back row to “really alleviate stress from my teammates who have to do other things like hit or set and take that pressure off of them by controlling the first touch.” Oglivie acknowledges she misses hitting at times, but, like many Hawaii players, she has been grounded in defense since her early days playing for coach Debby Yee with the Jammers Volleyball Club. “She really drilled in the fundamentals and foundation of defense and not letting the ball touch the floor,” Oglivie said. “Every team is scrappy in Hawaii, every school team or club team, so it’s fun to be in that environment.” After Hawaii takes on LSU to open today’s sub-regional doubleheader, there will be an island presence on both sides of the net in the match between Stanford and Pepperdine, led by Punahou graduate Scott Wong. “It’s just the depth of talent in Hawaii that’s so rich that it’s hard not to have such a good spreading of talent throughout the country and it’s pretty neat to see,” Wong said on Thursday. “You continue to see the passing down of the accumulated information and the wisdom from older players. And then it gives younger players a vision and a path to take steps to learn and grow, and I think thats’a rare thing.”

No knee pads for Francis everyone else has them as they watch the Hawaii LSU match. For what it’s worth.

I've been saying all season that this team was very good, but seriously flawed--bad defense, mediocre blocking, inconsistent hitting. I expect them to get past these two matches, but I wouldn't be shocked to see them lose either one. The whole PAC is weaker than usual. I seriously doubt anybody is counting chickens too early!
