The Hussars had a better chance against the German blitzkrieg than Fairleigh Dickinson has against Texas in this match. They have a roster you won't see much. Four players from Texas and four from Italy. Good thing they had the players from Texas when they started their season in a tournament at Tarleton State in Stephenville. That had to be a culture shock for the rest of the team. Their season's hitting percentage - 0.195. To be fair Stephenville can be a culture shock to plenty of people in Texas. I was born not too far from there. Big dairy area. I'm sure the Fairleigh Dickinson team is very excited to play in the tournament and it's going to be a thrill to be a part of that environment. A season highlight regardless of the result. Which is good. Because the result is going to be extremely quick and lopsided. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the quickest match in the tournament, depending on the number of challenges.

I grew up about 50 miles from Stephenville and on a dairy farm, so also quite familiar with it. One of the schools we usually played every year including in junior high. So that's why I made the culture shock comment since a kid from Dallas or Houston would likely be shocked, much less kids from the east and northeast (and Italy). Going to Austin will likely be a more pleasant experience for them except for the actual match.

It was all Gordon Wood and his oil industry fueled Brownwood recruiting machine. Art Briles turned that all around. In another completely unrelated note, Billie Gillispie, the former coach at Kentucky among many other places, became the head coach for the Tarleton State basketball team last year.

I grew up in Cleburne so quite familiar with that history. Stephenville had actually never won a district title in football prior to Briles. When I was in school, we loved playing Stephenville because it was usually a blowout. People there loved the winning when Briles came, but some to this day aren't thrilled with some of his "shadier" practices. So that's where Gillispie is now. He likely may have the record for the greatest number of D1 schools where he's been the HC.

On a personal level, my favorite coach at Texas ever. Not even close. Love that man. DKR is the greatest, obviously, but I never had any conversations with him.

I don't personally know David (about 12 years younger than him), but do have several personal notes. My first autograph was from David which I got as a young kid when we were both in the same barber shop. Also my first funeral was that of his mother because my dad was good friends with David's dad. Also David was a math major in college and my advanced math courses in high school were all taught by the same teacher that taught David. He used to rave about David as a student. However I am friends with Pat Culpepper as he retired back to Cleburne. Got to know him because he's in a regular golf game with my younger brother. As you probably know, many of the now "old timers" at Texas still love David. He might be the most beloved unsuccessful (and fired) HC in the history of college football.

Yeah, David got a master's in mathematics. One of his big issues as a head coach is he didn't have enough sympathy for student athletes who struggled in the classroom. Our academic support was medieval until Mackovic got there. Players flunked out left and right. Love it that you know Pat Culpepper. What a legend.

Texas is making their 39th NCAA tournament appearance and 19th consecutive. The Longhorns are 342-153 (.691) in sets played, winning two National Championships in 1988 and 2012; 5 Runner ups (1995, 2009, 2015, 2016 and 2021 Spring); 6 Final Fours (1986, 1987, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2014); 13 Elite Eights (1984, 1985, 1989, 1990, 1998, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2017, 2018, 2021); 7 Sweet Sixteens (1982, 1983, 1991, 1996, 1997, 2004, 2019).
Fairleigh Dickinson is making their first NCAA tournament appearance.

Tatijana’s name being censored is killing me😭😭😭 maybe you can put Fvcka or something instead The correct spelling is Fu čka (and it doesn't get censored ). I usually go by what players themselves use on their personal sites. On her Instagram site, she spells it with a "c" and not a "č". There are some sites on the web that use a "č", but they may just be trying to avoid nannybot filters like Volleytalk uses.

Okay serious question for Texas fans:
Are we going to ride this starting lineup the whole tournament? Even if they aren't producing as they normally do or are we going to get Kahahawai, Ewert, Parra, and Bergmark some playing time even if it's the last set? Personally I want to ride the starting lineup we have been going with, but I am always nervous that someone won't be on and we're gonna need to go to the bench either for a serve, blocking sub, passing/ds, or an offensive spark. No disrespect to Fairfield Dickinson, but I think that this is the game and maybe the 2nd round to get some other players some court time before regionals

I feel confident in any of the subs off the bench to make an impact. I just hope that JE doesn’t wait until it’s TOO LATE ya know? Maybe a set and a half in the first and second rounds, but once we get to regionals and beyond I feel like at this point in the season you trust your starters, but know when to take them out and give them a set rest to gather themselves again.

Maybe a set and a half in the first and second rounds, but once we get to regionals and beyond I feel like at this point in the season you trust your starters, but know when to take them out and give them a set rest to gather themselves again. He said in his Longhorn Weekly radio show comments he told the subs be prepared to come in and get the last point or two the way they have all season. That's probably where you'll see the bench play a factor. I don't see the bench starting the third set, even against Fairleigh Dickinson, the way we've seen in some other matches. Other than bringing in Parra, I'm not sure what sub I'd want to see. I don't really want Bergmark subbing for Caffey or O'Neal. If there are problems in the middle, it's more likely it's because of poor passing and/or setting. At this point I don't want Ewert coming in for SKT. That sounds like a panic move, and I feel will be interpreted that way by the team. That's how I would feel about it if I was a player. I don't want Fleck pulled. Phillips is what she is. You can't pull her for not terminating out of system, because that's not what she's expected to do anyway. If she gets the ball in system I expect her to take care of it just fine. I also don't see her being pulled for Kahahawei for blocking purposes. That really leaves Halter/Akana/Eggleston/Skinner. I don't want to see Eggleston off the floor for any reason. So maybe Parra for any of the others, especially in the back row. Don't see any other subs that get me excited. And I really like the serve of Akana/Eggleston/Skinner, so I don't know that I want Parra even coming in as a serving specialist for any of them. Which subs would you like to see if the team is struggling?

There are some sites on the web that use a "č", but they may just be trying to avoid nannybot filters like Volleytalk uses. It's because she's Italian, but she's of Slovenian origin. Her father Gregor is a former Slovenian basketball player, naturalized Italian (he played for Italy NT too). The correct Slovenian spelling of her family name is Fu čka (pronounced like "foochka"). Italian alphabet doesn't have the "č" letter, so, since she was born and raised in Italy, her name in Italian is spelled with the "c".
