If she was not coming to Illinois (one of my favorite teams) the best thing is that she goes to Wisconsin where they already have great players in every outside hitting position.

Kenna Sauer from Texas Tech in the Portal. Started at Mizzou. 6’1” people saying she is good. Might be a good OH pick up for us.

My first thought was that she might be pals with Burbage from Mizzou days but then realized that they never overlapped there. She did overlap at Mizzou with DeBerg and Omazic but who knows if they were saying good things about UIUC, having both transferred out.

I’ve given up on the transfer portal…full steam ahead on the roster and players we have in the gym this spring/summer. our depth at the pins is limited, but let’s hope for a healthy and maybe surprising 2023?

There is always the 2nd transfer window. After Spring when people see where they fit on the team.

Rumor was one trasferred out to be closer to a BF and playing time and the other transferred because she never went to class and might be academically ineligible .

Ah, good to know. This happened before my volleyball fandom took off so I never knew that scuttlebutt. Glad that they both found success elsewhere, nonetheless.

Would have loved to see Deberg on the 2018 final four team. Might have been the difference

DeBerg started the first five or six matches her freshman year (2017), hitting under .100. She lost her job to Beth Prince, who had been tried on the right side but was moved to the left pin because DeBerg was not getting the job done. That was when Cooney grabbed hold of the right side and kept it for as long as she was at UI. DeBerg was looking forward to her sophomore and junior years playing behind Quade and Prince, which I always thought prompted her decision to transfer. She probably would not have been the player she became if she had stayed at Illinois. It would have been nice having her available given Prince’s injury issues in 2018 and 2019, but I can’t blame her for transferring in order to get playing time.

I worry about our inability to secure highly rated players in recent years. It definitely feels like Illinois volleyball has been in a slow decline since Poulter graduated and that’s likely due to recruiting. I don’t know how much of it is due to coaching staff vs outdated facilities, but something has to change for us to get back to being an elite program. I really like Tamas though so I hope he can turn things around somehow.

New facilities would help but Tamas simply isn't a good recruiter and I don't expect it to change. He couldn't pull top recruits after a sweet 16 and final 4. No chance he starts getting them now that the team is average at best.

It's really crazy to think about how fast things have changed. In 2018... just 4 years ago, we were in the Final 4. Now we are consistently at risk of not making the tournament OR just simply straight up are not making it. It is really disheartening to see. Really hoping things can turn around but I am beginning to lose hope rapidly.
