Congratulations to Taylor de Boer on being selected to represent Canada! Good to see a young Illinois player get some visibility and exposure internationally. I see big things for this player both in terms of skill and leadership on the court! Tamas seems to be hitting all the marks on this one. Hate to jinks it but have a good feeling

Hey I am new to posting on this site but I have a question for y’all.. (that is my southern roots coming through!) Do you think it is odd that Illinois posted about Krista of course HUGE congrats all the way to her but why have we not seen anything published about De Boer? Listen I am 100% USA all the way. Period. but I think that it seems kind of disappointing that we have not seen nothing published to celebrate this young lady by Illini volleyball. Or am I just a grandmother who wants to see everyone succeed? I bet if any of our US Illini players made the team we would see a huge social coverage. Thoughts?

Welcome to the conversation, Chewblocka- glad you're joining in! I'm definitely with you on this. I don't know who manages the Illini Athletics social media accounts and what all goes into their decision-making but if I'm on the volleyball staff, I'd be pushing for some acknowledgement of Taylor's achievement. On top of making the national team, Taylor was Canada's team captain in this tournament last year. She should get some official recognition beyond a VolleyTalk shoutout : )

The announcement of the Canada U19 team just came out in the last few days, that may be the reason there has been so little about her in this regard. She also played for the Canadian U19 team last summer and was probably their leading hitter. I think I saw somewhere she was team captain even though she was one of the youngest on the team, but I have not been able to find it. There has been very little out there about DeBoer either last year or this year, don't know why not. I would think creating media attention for existing players would be helpful in the recruitment of new players.
In my opinion, Illini volleyball does not do a great job with their social media. For example, this thread floundered trying to get information about the exhibition in Valmeyer. Eventually there were a few photos posted of players signing autographs, nothing about the match. I have only seen one photo from the Notre Dame scrimmage. Most programs would have posted numerous photos on instagram or twitter or facebook. Occasionally there is a short video about the team or practice, but not often. It doesn't cost much to post photos and videos, and every team manager has a smart phone with video capabilities. I would think someone would be assigned the responsibility, but apparently not.
As a retired septuagenarian I probably have too much time on my hands to look for Illini volleyball information. Still, there are D3 programs out there who do a better job.
Edit: I wrote this while exit237a was posting, sorry for the duplication, and although it might appear otherwise, we do not coordinate these comments. Great minds....

I cant believe we dont have a student who is studying sports marketing handling it.

The SID assigned to volleyball probably handles it? But in the spring they are assigned to another sport that is taking most of their focus.

According to his bio, Andy Wenstrand was Director of something called “Creative and Emerging Media” when he worked at Nebraska. I don’t know how busy he is as Director of Volleyball Operations, and I understand keeping a dozen VTers happy is probably not high on his list of priorities, but educating and increasing the fan base should be a primary focus. He has the background. If nothing else he could find and mentor someone majoring in marketing who could use the development of volleyball media as an Honors project. Over 1000 people showed up for a barely publicized off-season exhibition match against a low-major opponent. Illini volleyball is fertile ground that needs to be nurtured.
What are the chances someone on the volleyball staff reads VT? Any possibility we can get through to them?

In my experience - NCAA Vball schools do not really recognize players that make their National Teams very much - I am not sure if that is due to lack of knowledge for other countries programs or lack of enthusiasm for them. Most of the Canadian National team programs run in the summer when large NCAA programs have summer school and summer training. Lots of coaches will not release their athletes for that for fear of injury or for lack of “practice/bonding” with the team. DeBoer is lucky that she has a coach that will release her and allow her to follow her national team dreams and that the tournament is during “off times”. There are quite a few Canadians playing in the NCAA that have been in the Team Canada pipeline for years and then suddenly don’t get to participate anymore because of these various reasons.

Just an FYI - Krista is the coach on the U19 team and the big OH - Abby Vanderwal from 1st Alliance is on the training team. Do your magic coach Krista!!

Glad to see that Chris is using the TdB shorthand! Proof positive someone in the Illini volleyball admin reads this thread.
