^ this. Tbh I really hope it’s not another pin. I think we’re fine there and we’ve yet to know for sure that Ham is also out. She would also be solid candidate for the 4th pin in a 6-2. Just judging off of clips but Alexander looks a lot more comfortable and clean,in a 5-1 she can continue to play left and if needed, Paula can take some serve receive pressure off her and vice versa. I think the fire of competition needs to be lit under Ikenaga and Edmonds and I like them both. It would just be nice to see that particular position (maybe setter as well) stand out more in terms of how their gameplay positively affects a match. A pin who can pass, take that. A pin who can smash too, even better. Though I think a talented middle might be good in case of injury My only thing is I see Hakas and Adeyemi being a lot more valuable right away than Sibley and Ross were and I was a Makenna Ross STAN lol I just think another pin that would edge out the freshman AND Paula might not bode well for chemistry but if they’re just being brought in for depth then I guess. Only thing I would pursue is a true opposite because as of now we’re going into the season without one. But my mind is still pretty convinced we go to the middle sub 6-2, considering the type of pins being brought in. Not to mention the fact that this could likely be Kate’s last year and Matias needs the floor time in some meaningful capacity, no was the staff wants to take the chance on a barely played Matias and a true freshman being the only options at setter, especially with our toss up luck at the portal

Also, Are there still players out there that is worth the scholarship? I’m guessing most of the talented players have already signed with a team with practice starting in a couple of months.

I think because Kate would most likely complete her undergraduate education since she will have been here for 4 years already. Though she did state that she intended to the Richardson School of Law after she graduated with her undergraduate degree, so it seems like she at least plans on staying for Hawaii for a few years after

She’s a junior in eligibility but a senior academically because of so could easily take the last year somewhere else and we couldn’t fault her for wanting to. I hope she has plans to stay but with that cancelled Big West season, it’s hard to gauge what the athletes are able to do. Not sure if she has 1 or 2 more years left of eligibility because her true freshman season still counted against her even though she didn’t play. Could possibly petition the NCAA for her covid year at another school that would honor it? Not sure if she’s looking for grad school or just take a lighter schedule and draw things out to meet eligibility requirements like most athletes do.

I think experienced setting is going to be important for the next couple of classes

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is Lang's class the final class in the NCAAs that has the extra COVID season?

Some will still take the chance to move on to another school. Once the portal is open, there is no closing it. Unhappy student athletes will always look for new homes while others will seek more NIL or be closer to home and will be willing sacrifice some benefits to be home.

See I think it’ll be less about being closer to home (trust me, working with that age group, homesickness is NOT that big of a deal) and more about the concentrated wealth of athletes at Top tier programs, understanding that they would rather make an impact somewhere else than cheerleading on a stacked roster.

Kate will stay, she’s learning from an AA setter and 3 time Olympian plus she’s finally surrounded by decent pins plus an AA middle. Not to mention a crazy big fan base. Apparently she also loves the mountains and the beaches here.

Why can't the answer be somewhere in between? Yes, I recognized times have changed--but I still think we are underachieving a tad bit. There are several non-P5 schools with similar or smaller budgets doing better than us. That said you have to recognize our program was on an upswing and COVID and then the Big West's subsequent decision to cancel the season screwed us over hard hard hard. We are only now just recovering from that. I really wish our school was able to capitalize on the portal in all sports--in theory who wouldn't want to spend their last year or two at UH? But all sports seem to be struggling with this. You hit the nail on the head with COVID. The BW went from three teams qualifying and all making it to the second round or beyond in 2019 to one team making it and getting booted in the first round in 2022. Hawai, in particular, never saw its two most potent pins, Hanna and Jolie, ever see the floor again, along with its most valuable assistant coach. I think it’s really fair to only compare BW teams with each other for now. That being said, no one wants UH to turn into a conference-winning first round doormat. In that regard, I think the team really looks like it is on the upswing in terms of talent, but we’ll have to see.

Hoping nothing out of the control of Robyn, interferes this time with her plans.

(Near her hometown)
