Call her what you want - your fave could never. RAM is a winner through and through. She helped transform USAVB from a pretender to a consistent contender. Do you all need a reminder of the trajectory USAVB went on with her as a leader? You all like to ride on Hawai’i and yet “pretend” teams come and go and Na Wahine are still there. The game has changed to a point where Hawai’i will probably never compete the way we expect them to year after year to do so. I’m ok with that because I’m a realist and accept %*$# for what it is. Who has “bested” us outside of NCAA play the last 15+ years?! - New Mexico State - UC Irvine - UC Santa Barbara - Cal Poly - Nevada - Fresno State - BLAH BLAH BLAH From as long as I remember we lost to “bad” teams. The game has evolved. 10+ years ago your fave swore Na Wahine could never lose to Oregon, yet here we are. I’m deleting, yet again. Tried to find solidarity here but it’s just a bunch of bickering. Being a fan meant something 20 years ago when I joined this forum. I see so much ugly, I’m going to call it out one more time before I leave. The difference between a fan and madden55 is I love myself enough to never feel sorry about what I do or what I say. I’m secure in my thoughts and feelings, which I have observed you are blatantly not. Love that you cheer on Serbia and claim to not know much about the game domestically. Yet you chime in unwanted and make snide comments about teams that have and will continue to never be contenders in the game you claim to know so much about. I know who you are as a player and it’s unsurprising the pompous attitude carries over to the persona you’ve elected to consume on this forum. I feel sad you’ll never experience success as a player. And that’s all predicated on what you consider to be successful. You being a barely NAIA / D3 level player with some int’l knowledge shouldn’t threaten anyone. And yet you do. Because you’re a bully. погледај се у огледало пре него што судиш. And with that I proudly delete my account (again) for the last time. Please don’t ever tag madden in this thread lol we don’t need anymore gremlins 😂 Thankfully I had the presence of mind to 🚫 that one a long time ago. I don't have to read what they post unless someone responds to him/her/they. But I'm living for the shade. 💅

Here's to the Wahine ball handlers putting in some work on the off season to tighten up their serve receive and overall ball control. Unfortunately, the coaches constantly state that the serve/receive game is the key -- year after year. And year after year, there's no significant improvement -- in serve and in receive -- by players from year to year. I'm not sure what they're doing in the off-season, but whatever it is, it isn't working.

That’s literally not true, games with passing breakdowns don’t mean individuals haven’t made significant improvements to their serve receive from the year prior. Passing isn’t only about improvement of technique , a lot of it is mental and if you play tight, which this group can at times, that will lead to breakdowns more than anything. I mean I don’t know how much you actually know about the actual skill of passing but if you see faulty technique I would mention that and the specifics of what you see rather than making blanket statements like that when the numbers might say differently.

Wait, why is there hate for madden right now? Madden was complimentary when Hawaii was playing well and gave thoughts on when Hawaii was playing bad and had a similar reaction to wahinefan's horrible posts. I didn't see anything that I thought was out of line.

I mean 808 is not wrong tho. Time eventually reveals the truth and if each year our ball control always gets exposed in our biggest games then there’s a problem in cultivating the right training or lack there of. If it becomes mental then there’s more to it then doubt, with constant training and preparation there is nothing to doubt. Nor should there be a need for animated examples in the mist of a games timeout! I’m not calling out coach Rob, I think her passion for the team and the girls are absolutely awesome and a big positive but there needs to be some changes in training and coaching not necessarily her but additional coaches to help find new approaches to help find a remedy and lay improvements! This program has developed many unknown All -Americans like Amber…Ahuna, Cubi-Otinero , Maglio. If you are content with our current status and think we can’t improve in our coaching/training/method and being the current Delaware’s , Fairfield’s and Northern Illinois going into Lincoln .. Madison.. and Austin in the first rounds as a back end top 50-60’s Team as a reward for winning your conference then congrats cause that’s where we are already

Yes, Hawaii's serve receive has been faulty for a few seasons now but I think there are incremental improvements happening. We saw that during the Big West tournament and we saw them fight to hold the line against Iowa State before succumbing to Oregon's consistent service pressure. I hope the coaching staff has found some easy keys they can use to not only teach passing in their gym but also to help their players refocus during matches. Volleyball is a rebound sport and passing can be a fickle skill to master. It definitely requires all those hours to get good at it. Caylen wasn't a passer for her high level club team. Ikenaga was a 6 rotation outside for her high school team but in my opinion, the OIA is not a strong conference and it didn't put Tayli in pressure situations where she needed to pass a good serve for multiple ros. Wags was the only reliable passer for the Bows the past 2 seasons.

Hopefully Hawaii doesn't get sent to a NCAA sub-regional with a "bigger-better" like Oregon. Oregon had passing problems in the first set, but then they straightened things out while also serving Hawaii tougher the rest of the match. Oregon was especially difficult because even with their height they are not a high ball team. With even an only decent pass, they could shoot out a quick set and their tall hitters could often basically throw their shots towards an open spot on the floor. Oh shoot, now I remember what I was thinking back in August . . . deja vu all over again. If Hawaii makes it again next year I hope we luck into a 4 vs 5 or 6 vs 3 bracket.

Hawaii's main issue recently hasn't been passing and transition defense IMO. It's shaky at ties, but solid enough.
The issue, IMO, is Hawaii hasn't had a terminating pin since Van Sickle in 2021. Hawaii's outside's are just under/over .200, which cannot be the norm if a team wants to make it to the Sweet 16 and beyond. Our team has literally been one bail-out terminating 6 rotation pin away from being that Top 25 team. Alexander was showing glimpses in the beginning of the season and returning to form as the season ended, but for the most part, Hawaii has just not been able to secure the kind of pin hitters the top level teams have. There's potential for Alexander, Hakas, Geursching, and Adeyemi to develop into that, but we've desperately needed a big time outside or opposite to compliment Igiede.
Secondarily, Hawaii pins have been short over the last two years. It's not all about being tall, but when Hawaii faces a team like Oregon that can serve, pass, and play defense just as good as Hawaii, the physicality of a team like Oregon will tip the scale.
Then again, if Hawaii'a 5'11 - 6'0 pins this season could have all hit .250 + at about 2.5 KPG to compliment Igiede and Evans, we may have won more matches and earned a higher seed. In 2021 (Washington) and 2023 (Oregon) Hawaii just didnt have the resume to avoid that second round match up after "upsetting" at SEC (Mississippi) and Big 12 (Iowa State) team.
---
I have been wondering if a player like Sylvester could make the transition to the pin. I know she has the potential to be an outstanding middle, but at 6'3, physical and athletic, she could be an outstanding pin... Just a thought.

You need a pin who can score no matter the situation! I was able to watch Sylvester live a few times this season and I actually see a pin hitter in her. She just doesn't have any passing or floor D capabilities so it would make it tough for her to transition.

Agree to disagree. Our hitters are closers to the top pins in the nation than our back row is close to the top back courts in the country. If you go back and look at our losses this year--the other teams' pins are getting better quality swings. Our digs aren't to target, our backup setting wasn't that good. (Tayli did improve on this area in the last month--great job)
We're not winning serve-pass and then losing the match (this season). We are losing serve-pass and being out dug and blocked. Conversely, I've thought we won a couple of games even though we lost on serve-pass (in the Big West) because we have better arms.
I think that it's a talent issue--we haven't used a scholarship on a back court player since Akiu. Our team is exactly what is being built--a bunch of really athletic, heavy handed arms--who need work to develop on the passing side.
That said, we might have help coming next season. The team (I think) has a luxury of being able to get the best available player in the portal, if we have any scholies.

Even when passing goes awry, teams have hitters who can create kills and swing their way out of sticky situations. The Wahine floor D was really top notch the past few weeks as they have held down the good opponents they've played. All facets will need to improve for the Wahine to breakthrough into the Sweet 16.

Yeah if we had an Emily Hartong/Kanani Danielson pin or a really dynamic setter, we might be able to still make things work. But we could have also gotten an Ogilve or another Akiu too.
But basically, Alexander, Adeymi didn't play much back row in high school and club. Guersching had bad passing numbers as Youngstown State. Hakas was 6-rotations in Israel, but the ball is different there and the level isn't as high. (And as expected--she was the most ready to go)
On the positive side, Alexander is probably one year away from being a solid 6-ro player. She was passing well enough that opposing teams started to target Ham/Hakas. That's a plus.

People do not be to hard on Tali Hakas, Paula Guersching, and Stella Adeyemi. Need to remember these 3 players only had fall practice with the Wahine coaching staff. Not to mention Paula Guersching was a little dinged up when she got here, too. Would wait to comment on their receiving and passing after a full Spring practice. I mean, Caylen Alexander improved her receiving and passing after a full Spring practice.
On another note, I can see Robyn using Adrianna Arquette the same way she used Norene Iosia, at some point, maybe.
