Tip of the hat to PSU. Great effort! The future looks bright with this new HC.

For me it feels like it’s inevitable that Wisconsin will win (even sweep) so I’m having a hard time hanging on every play I may have to hunt you down for jinxing this match at this stage. LOL Yeah they wanted to prove me wrong. Point taken PSU!

Penn State stressed us out for sure in the two most recent meetings. Their serve is good and floor D is tough, but also seems as if we were getting in our own way. Devyn gets in her head. She did it under pressure in the tourney last year. GG couldn't get out of her funk. Franklin couldn't pass and she was trying to do too much. That telegraphed roll shot is great...when used in moderation. She wasn't swinging...like at all. Kudos to PSU, but Badgers need to pull it together.

Badgers were very lucky PSU couldn't keep the ball in set one. PSU had more kills than the Badgers (and man the stars were weird last night).
Definitely the tough serve is what pushed it to 5.
Now PSU go out next year and... be better than Nebraska!

Orzol had a super rough night on offense, but her serve was stellar and brought the Badgers back a few times!
Of course the bad passing and rough setting didn't help either.

The superstitious part of me is somewhat freaked out by CC’s new match-day hairdo. On reflection, the hairdo worked. Those are her blocking braids!

Someone needs to draw lines on how far a fan can go near the court to yell at the opposing teams server. Some Wisconsin students were standing at the edge of the court, in front of the student section, to yell at Penn State servers. I know that yelling is apart of the game and that players must adjust to it, but still its a little too close to the bench players and the servers themselves.

Well, in the Field House at least, you don't need a line, because the court is raised a few inches off the concrete floor. The "line" is already there. And there is a walkway, I'll guess maybe six, maybe eight feet wide between the first row bench of seats and the edge of the court. So, yes, if the server goes all the way back to the edge of the court, they will be that distance from the fans in the first row. And if someone is walking in the walkway, they will be even closer to the serving player. If you have a particular point in the match, a score and set as a reference point, tell us and we can go look at the video.

It’s really not that close…other schools are much closer. Look at Texas, they have students on the sides literally standing on the blue of the court, an OH RS approach could literally get in the way

But judging from the TV view, a couple of Wisconsin fans were shockingly close, compared to where they would be in Rec Hall. Then again, given how well the Penn State servers did against the Badger back row players, maybe we should pay to have those guys come to Rec Hall and yell at our servers at every match.

Ha!
They probably were close. But there is dropoff point where the court ends. So they couldn't be on the "in" surface. If you serve from way off the line you definitely could be just 6 ft from fans.
If you serve at the line, the distance is probably twenty feet.
A few Big Ten schools have endline seats that are on the court playing surface (or constitute the non playing areas). Minnesota, Indiana, Purdue come to mind.
I couldn't see any server that serves from that far back so I couldn't say how close they were.

I sat on that endline when I've come out. I remember Molly Haggerty in her first year and Sarah Dodd serving from way back on the edge of the court. They were close. Normally, though, players aren't really that close at all. But it's true nobody was on the walkway in prior years. That changed with the student section starting to fill up. It's gotten way more active since last year. Layouts vary. It's also true the court in Penn State basically has a huge space behind the endline compared to most venues. There is a lot of space for run downs. There's a lot of space in Madison too, but not that much.

The fans do stay off the court, but its like right behind Penn State. Penn State was not affected by the fans, but I still think that they should stand back a bit. I'll try to upload a picture, but I'm not really sure how to do it on proboards. If the picture is small, you can click on it to get a better view.

Those people are ten or twelve feet away from the server. I don't see that as a problem at all. And if you're talking about how close they are to 'the bench', if anything the down ref is going to tell the bench people to move back closer to their chairs (which happens fairly regularly, to the Wisconsin bench and others).
