It is around the 8-6 in the 3rd set when it is the most visible. The fans do stay off the court, but its like right behind Penn State. Penn State was not affected by the fans, but I still think that they should stand back a bit. I'll try to upload a picture, but I'm not really sure how to do it on proboards. If the picture is small, you can click on it to get a better view. View Attachment
Those people are ten or twelve feet away from the server. I don't see that as a problem at all. And if you're talking about how close they are to 'the bench', if anything the down ref is going to tell the bench people to move back closer to their chairs (which happens fairly regularly, to the Wisconsin bench and others). Look at 6-6 in the third. Same server, same students in your photo, same distance between them. But there's a second or two of video from a camera 2/3rds the way up in the student section that gives a different perspective on it all.

Well, in the Field House at least, you don't need a line, because the court is raised a few inches off the concrete floor. The "line" is already there. And there is a walkway, I'll guess maybe six, maybe eight feet wide between the first row bench of seats and the edge of the court. So, yes, if the server goes all the way back to the edge of the court, they will be that distance from the fans in the first row. And if someone is walking in the walkway, they will be even closer to the serving player. If you have a particular point in the match, a score and set as a reference point, tell us and we can go look at the video. It is around the 8-6 in the 3rd set when it is the most visible. Camera angle makes that seem a lot closer than it is. If you were at Purdue or the Pav, the students would literally be on top of the server. I think Covelli is pretty close too. It is true that having students on the walkway is a relatively new thing. It used to be as well that the bench players would be actually near the bench. But nowadays, teams like to have a view down the sideline for challenges.

It was pretty rare that a server would come that far back, but even then there's a gap between the students and the server. The walkway itself is just not that wide, so it's tough to move that much further back. (This is admittedly over 15 years ago so not terribly relevant to the updated Field House. There was usually some interaction between whichever player stood on the end of the team and the students/band but it was usually pretty good natured.)

The floor surface is the same as it has been for 15 years so those distances are the same.

I feel like the student presence at volleyball matches is much larger and more active nowadays. There has always been some students present, but I feel like we've opined for a larger student presence for many years. Now it's there regularly. It really adds to the atmosphere at matches, but there is a bit of overflow with all the bodies and kinetic energy.

That's more of what I am referring to. FWIW, there was a match this year that when it was over, I saw a friend on the other side of the court I wanted to go say hello to. So to get over there, I was 'swimming upstream' against the flow of the crowd leaving, and for a footfall or two, got forced onto the floor itself by the crowd. And the security guy a little ways up gave me a dirty look and a headshake of "No!". That's not the walkway, and it wasn't during play, but they were pretty serious about people staying off the floor itself.

Oh, the floor itself was always a red line for the staff/security, but the gray walkway was basically a free movement zone. Heck, some of the older crowd will remember when students (I was occasionally one, but Dan the baritone player from the band was the famous one) could run all the way around the Field House along the walkway to pump up the crowd during timeouts.

Fun coincidence: The Chicago Bulls of the 1970’s had a big fat guy who ran around the Old Stadium floor hi-5ing the fans… During dead time-outs the announcer would bellow “Where are you SUPER FAN?” And this 350ish guy would put down his beer and trundle around the floor! All that went away when MJ arrived & the Bulls got good at basketball😃

I think the security guards would keep fans off the wooden floor now even if the building was on fire and we needed to exit.
Although they aren't much of a force.

But as protective as they are, every year for the final, cold November football game, "Badgerville" brats and beer and band pregame moves into the Field House, where everyone is walking on and presumably spilling beer on the well-covered floor. This year that was the Nov 26 Minnesota game, with NCAA VB coming six days later.

Agree pretty much with those predictions although I won't be surprised to see Oregon and Florida to win close ones. Nebraska is still not right after losing Knuckles and all the drama with their setters this year. I wasn't impressed with Pitt in their second meeting against Louisville. But Louisville can do that to you. Also think it's advantage to Florida having been to Madison already this year even though it was at the Kohl Center. When I was an athlete in a different sport some familiarity was always a good thing. Minny vs Texas is the match I really want to see this weekend. Marquette should feel free to ruin that for me though. Texas is staying home.... Minnesota looking to send the big guy off with a 'Ship plays spoiler --- Taylor plays at another level with her recent POY season... and setting finally figures it out. TX All-Stars are stunned at the speed of MN offense and can't catch up with the B1G seasoned maroon and gold.
