Well , they’re moving on…. I hope Hambly is ready to sub Smith on if needed against USD. Since miner isn’t really setting middle I’d prefer the blocking and Smith seems more ready. But who knows maybe Francis proves me wrong Francis did what she's supposed to do, take attention away from the outside hitters and scare the crap out of opposing hitters. Smith did neither. Yeah, I noticed that Sami was not ready for quicks, but that's a timing problem she can solve. She hasn't played since late October. I don’t think that strategy will work against San Diego. If Francis isn’t quite ready to contribute for an entire match because of rustiness or conditioning, maybe Hambly can figure out how and when to have her in match in a strategic way.

Smith was very solid defensively for Stanford and honestly is probably faster at getting to the pin than Sami is right now. Obviously the potential is way higher for Francis but Annabelle defintely did her job in the last 6 weeks. Hopefully Sami can continue to improve and be more effective Saturday night

I agree it should be something stanford tries to open up, but im not too worried if were pin heavy, we have been all year

I’m glad Francis played today. Every match she plays gets her closer to 100%. She was definitely rusty and slow. Could not close the block. Could not get off the ground, zero hops.
If SD exploits her too badly and we drop a set, I hope Hambly goes to A Smith in set 2. She has proven to be a solid blocker with good lateral speed.

People carp about the attendance at Maples. And section 11 (middle of the court, opposite side from the scorers' table) looked pretty empty.
But go the Stanford's website or StubHub, and there isn't a single seat available in that section. (I checked shortly before the match, and just looked again for Saturday.)
Or pretty much any of the other middle sections in the lower part of the arena. So I'm not sure who has all those tickets, but they're not showing up.

Old people with plenty of money who have had those seats forever, I'm sure. I looked at that map the other day and it factored very slightly into my decision to just watch this and *all* the other matches on tv. I'm over feeling guilty about not making the trip these last couple of seasons. Players and coaches know their fanbase is far far larger than what they see in the seats. They seem to be able to hit the 'on' switch on thier own when they eventually decide to even though they can't hear us

Francis had three kills (3-4-9, -.111). BUT...two of those came at 24-24 and 25-24 of that insane first set. A genuinely monster comeback for the ages! And her stuff block...a BS can ignite a team's D...propelled Stanford's defense the rest of the way. Congrats!

Props to the whole team for that amazing comeback in the first set. And for keeping focus/foot on the gas after that. Especially impressed with Caitie Baird's serving through that run in the first. She made a lot of serves and put pressure on a really good passing team.

I'm sure with more practice Francis will improve at least slightly, but this is the regional final we are talking about... hopefully Hambly manages this accordingly.

I just checked, and Section 11 is where I was sitting. It’s true that there were vacant seats (although I wouldn’t say the section was empty or even near empty; it was certainly way more full than for a regular season match). I guess I don’t have too much insight to offer, then. I can only say that I and everyone sitting near me last night are Stanford season ticket holders. Maybe the powers-that-be at Maples reserve that section for season tickets?

I'm sure a version of this video must have been posted somewhere in VT. This version is great because it is posted by a non-volleyball YouTube Channel, Jomboy, who has 1.7 million subscribers. Awesome to expose the sport to others and hopefully gain new fans.
I love how the poster goes into detail about all the reactions of fans/players. A great play by Georgiades.
