As the official UW sky-is-falling dooms-sayer, I'm going to suggest that Leslie Gabriel deserves some serious props.
She inherited a program with a bit of a bare-cupboard situation (sure, she was part of the staff, but not in charge); the prior coach left quickly; the AD departed; she has to "break in" a new AD (working with a new boss is a task all to itself); the entire conference was imploding around her; she has to prepare for a daunting move to the B1G in short order; and then the injury bug swept through Montalke leaving her with a truly depleted squad.
My biggest concern was a last-place, or close to last-place finish in the PAC; missing the tournament; not ever being ranked in the top 25 and a new AD who might not understand all the obstacles in Tui's way.
I'm not ready to name her PAC coach of the year just yet, but I'm starting to feel like it's not too far-fetched to at least have the idea bouncing around your noodle.

Barton player of the week again! Go Dawgs!! A little surprised Wilmes didn't get OPOW but Vernon was excellent for OSU Unfortunately, when I click on the link, it says, “403 permission denied”. So I’m not able to see the write up to see how they were chosen. I am assuming that they are still writing it up and it will pop up on the Washington Instagram soon there after. Never mind actually popped up just now.

There's something to say about her in-game demeanor as well. She's cool, calm, and collected. Very focused, yet she is also extremely motivating towards her players. I really have enjoyed her thus far, and it seems her players are very fond of her as well.

Interesting to see some of these programs with 18 to 20+ athletes on the roster. Unfortunately Washington is too expensive for them to incorporate walk-ons. That of course is just my perception. Two really good recruits are coming in next year (setter and middle) and one for 2025 (oh/ds). If my math serves me correctly, I think that leaves one available scholarship.

UW in state tuition is about the same as other public universities, especially considering their academics.

Well, on that note, how many in-state of Washington athletes are actually ranked and able to compete on a team like Washington AND only pay tuition fees and want to stay here? I don’t really see any on the top Volleyball lists. So for an out-of-state student to come in, they would be spending around 60k. I have actually spoken to a few of the previous ranked recruits from Washington and they refuse to stay in the state.

Just like everywhere else, some Washington State kids want to stay near home for college and some want to go as far away as they can get. Some have specific targets of where they want to go for school and some don't care. Everyone is different, despite your statement about having "spoken to a few of the previous ranked recruits from Washington".

Unless they recently changed this, PAC-12 travel party size restriction is 15. (Unlimited at home.) I think Washington has never had more than 15 on the roster the entire time I've been following them. It's a choice, of course, but I think there is something to be said for having everyone on the team be able to travel with the team, as opposed to having a bunch of players who practice and suit up at home but don't travel with the rest of the team on the road.

What, if anything, does this mean for UW VB? Dannen starts today (Monday, Oct 9, 2023). Athletic Director at Tulane for the past 8 years. University of Northern Iowa before that. (He's a 1989 grad of UNI.) Seems Tulane's football turnaround occurred on his watch. But what does this mean for volleyball? Not sure what it does for VB, but he sure does like purple and gold. He might confuse an old UNI outfit/pullover/polo for a UW one some night.

Jim handed off to Keegan a lot more than Keegan left for Leslie. It was going to be a down year this year but getting to the NCAA tournament in my view makes it a successful year. Even if we lose in the first round. We just need to hit the recruiting trail hard and re-establish recruiting flow from year to year to get back. I think Leslie can do it. She's got a young staff that looks like they can grind. Hope she can teach that to them.

They may not have wanted to award two Huskies and may have wanted to award the Beavers for a successful weekend. I may get into trouble for saying this, but while Vernon had an excellent weekend and was key to both of OSU's 5-set victories, the only stat that favored her over Wilmes was total kills (38 vs 35), although in 10 vs 7 sets: 10s 38k 14e 98ta .245 3.8k/s I trust Wilmes will have many more opportunities for awards, while Vernon, a senior, may not. Just too bad there isn't a Sophomore of the Week award!
