can someone someone tell me all the tools the committee uses to determine the seeds for the tournament? i think i'm forgetting one or two of them The following criteria shall be employed by a governing sports committee in selecting participants for NCAA championships competition [Bylaw 31.3.3; Criteria for Selection of Participants]: Won-lost record Strength of schedule Eligibility and availability of student-athletes for NCAA championships In addition to Bylaw 31.3.3, the Women’s Volleyball Committee has received approval from the NCAA Division I Competition Oversight Committee to consider the following criteria in the selection of at-large teams for the volleyball championship (not necessarily in priority order): Primary Criteria Rating Percentage Index Head-to-head competition Results versus common opponents Significant wins and losses KPI Secondary Criteria If the evaluation of the primary criteria does not result in a decision, the secondary criteria will be reviewed. All the criteria listed will be evaluated. Late-season performance (last 10 matches) Eligibility and availability of student-athletes Location of contest thanks

That's not a good comparison. Nebraska fans supporting Nebraska is going to be 1000% louder than Nebraska fans supporting Louisville. Well, I don’t think Texas is going to fall to an 8/9, but I guess we’ll see. Plus maybe the committee decides they like bracketing the matchup regardless. But I’d be excited for a Nebraska/Texas matchup in Lincoln. I was rooting for a Texas v Nebraska matchup in Omaha last year. The handshakes would be all kinds of fun! Bestie did they even shake hands the last time they met? What if they don't even shake hands again LOL.

uofaGRAD I got excited recently when you mentioned that you were going to be part of a broadcast for a Div I volleyball match. To be honest, I can't remember why I got excited then I remembered. I've always had "behind the curtain" questions and I know that Paul or Karch aren't probably going answer my questions to them.
So questions to you, young broadcaster, if you wish to answer:
1. How did you get the gig? I commentated quite a few matches at Arizona last season, but they were all Arizona produced live streams for when Pac didn't pick up the games for their network. I knew I wanted to continue commentating on the side post-graduation, but also wanted to get my feet on the ground at my full time job, so I shot off a couple emails to universities near me and UNT reached out pretty quickly and from there I sent a resume and some clips of me commentating Arizona matches. From there, they gave me three games to do this season.
2. Do you do color or analysis? So technically its play-by-play (PxP) and color/analyst. I did both at Arizona, but all color for UNT, which I prefer.
3. Is there a need for color and analysis? I've seen one Big12 broadcast (Texas game away) where one guy was handling both jobs Need is a strong word. There's games at Arizona I did where I was the only one, but it's always nice to have both in my opinion. Makes for easier commentating, as it's more conversational rather than one person speaking to you for two hours lol.
4. I know you were "local" meaning right off the court. Have you been offered remote gigs? Is it impossible unless it's a big national game? What I mean is that obviously when LHN does it, it's local where they're up in the stands with the LHN logo on a banner stretched behind them. But for the last FS1 broadcast ("at" Gregory), it was done remotely from some studios....somewhere. Because when I looked up and behind me, no human beings. Just a bunch of electronic equipment. I have not! But again, I haven't really put my name out there all that much yet. I think most ESPN+ productions, which is what I was on this season, are local.
5. I wonder about (4) because if you're broadcasting remotely, you're at the mercy (in your analysis) of the cameras, whereas in person you can catch something off to the side. Maybe? I feel like it's nice to be able to say stuff like "oh in person it looked like this ___" but I don't think that's a HUGE deal. The other time it's really handy is set location. It's hard on TV to tell the height and width of a set sometimes.
6. Do you want to or can you interview players for both sides to get background for the game? I did not interview players, but I did interview coaches for both sides before every game, which was fun.
7. Do you get graded on your performance and then they tell you to your face? i.e. how to get the next gig No grading, and really not even much feedback in my games. I got feedback from the other commentator with me since they're obviously much more experienced and seasoned than me. Both thought I was really good, which made me happy. The guy I did two games with said he's going to tell producers ever looking for a color commentating role to contact me, which was awesome because I hadn't even asked him to do anything like that at that point.
8. Do you get to pick from your next gig? I'm not 100% sure what you mean on this one, like pick the games I get to do? Not really. Although I'm hoping UNT makes me more of a regular and then I'll have a little more power to preference.
9. Is there a lack of commentators or a waiting list to be on a broadcast? I'm not really sure! I think it may be dependent where you are. The first guy I commentated with made it seem like around here, schools are looking for color commentators, but I imagine if you're working for like Big Ten network, there may be a lot more people trying to be analysts than play-by-play.
10. Any other behind-the-curtain stuff I didn't ask that you wondered about and learned once you did your first broadcast?
The weirdest thing was having the producer in your ear! At Arizona, I never really had that so that was an adjustment. They were good though. Any time you see a graphic, the PxP commentator just gets to read the graphic and then your job is to make a story out of it or add something more to it or explain the why. I think that's what makes the job difficult for some, as sometimes with graphics or coming out of timeouts, you're making something out of nothing.I guess games expire from ESPN+? So I don't have any links anymore sadly. I assumed they stayed on their forever lol. FWIW, Lauren Cook-West (color analyst for Husker VB broadcasts) was interviewed on the Volleyball State podcast a few weeks ago and talked about what it's like to do her part of the broadcast remotely (for away matches).

tbh at this point, plz send us to Lincoln. I think the pressure of playing a higher seed will allow the girls to relax a bit, which won't necessarily correlate to a win, but at least they can play a bit more freely than if they were playing a lower seeded team. How sweet would it be after 2021? the 2021 match never happened. it is indelibly etched in my memory banks

Why isn’t volleyball played at Moody? Well, there are several reasons. The primary one is that Elliott doesn't want to. He likes the atmosphere at Gregory Gym. Texas actually struggles to sell it out. He'd rather have a full Gregory Gym than a half empty Moody. With TV wanting 11am tip off times on Saturday and Sunday for big matches, that's going to disincentivize moving over to Moody for big matches even more. There are a couple of logistical reasons, although although I don't think there as big of an issue as what I just typed. Texas doesn't own the building, but contractually it has the right to use Moody a certain number of days per year. In order to get an arena at no cost to UT for the athletic department, they have to allow the owners to profit from the building and location most of the calendar year. Both men's and women's basketball teams play there, and it holds a number of events, including graduation. I think there are still enough dates remaining for volleyball, and even if there weren't, I'm sure something could be worked out. But it is a potential issue. The other thing is that season ticket priorities don't automatically shift over. Longhorn Foundation donations for sports other than men and women's basketball count towards seating priorities, but Moody has its own donation priority. So, for example, someone who buys expensive donation seats at DKR-Memorial gains access to priority seating in Gregory, but not Moody. I can't imagine that would actually block hosting a volleyball match at Moody, but it's another logistics issue to work through. My guess is that we'll see a match played in Moody for the A&M game next year. I don't know that that's the case, but that's my guess.

KPI ranks teams' resumes on a game-by-game basis and which was developed by Kevin Pauga, an associate AD for Michigan State. KPI ranks every team’s wins and losses on a positive-to-negative scale, where the worst-possible loss receives a value of roughly around -1.0 and the best-possible win receives a value of roughly 1.0. KPI then averages these scores across a season to give a score to a team’s winning percentage. The formula uses opponent’s winning percentage, opponent’s strength of schedule, scoring margin, pace of game, location, and opponent’s KPI ranking. faktorsports.com/Texas is ranked #6 fwiw

Why isn’t volleyball played at Moody? I cannot think of a single way in which Moody would be superior to Gregory for volleyball.
