I am! I love tournament time. I was curious about the "early match" and I looked up the schedule on texassports.com. Man, they have really gotten sloppy. The schedule shows SMU and Texas State playing Friday! I had to go to the SMU site to see the true time.
It's been fixed.

Has Barnes seriously been that bad? I haven’t paid much attention to Texas in recent weeks. My biggest issue with Barnes this year is the outsized expectations I placed on her. I watched her against Nebraska and I looked at her career and seasonal numbers and I literally thought we were getting a bit of a duplicate of Fleck, and Halter and Akana would simply fill their previous roles. Then Halter simply didn’t give up the libero position, helped in part by Barnes playing beach at CC-A&M while she graduated in the spring, so she didn’t have the benefit of transferring in January the way Fleck did. That said, early on Barnes mystified me by consistently letting serves go that she thought were out of play, only to see them land a foot inside the line. Or really bad shanks that were hit straight to her. She’s also not nearly as explosive as either Fleck or Halter. I also think it’s been a big adjustment for her going from being the defensive floor leader her whole career and being elite among her peers - a la 3x conference libero of the year - to playing a secondary DS role. The transition hadn’t been wholly smooth, although to everyone’s credit there doesn’t seem to be any apparent tension. All of that said, her serving has been a big surprise to me. She came in with some pretty big career numbers, but I questioned how well that would translate to this level. Well, in my opinion she’s been our most effective server. We don’t always score on her service rotation, but she regularly puts the opponent out of system. In my opinion more than anyone else on the team. Her, Swindle, and Skinner are all surprising reasons that I actually think this crew is even better from the service line than last year’s, and I thought Texas last year was one of the top serving teams in the entire tournament. Certainly the best in the Final Four. uofaGRAD gave the best plan B when Barnes is struggling, and like he suggest, that might be good for Wenaas’s overall game, too. But honestly, if Texas is going to play above their #2 seed - or even possibly match it - they’re going to need consistent serve receive and defense in a way they haven’t always had this season, and quite a bit of that falls on Barnes’ shoulders.

It’s interesting. Everyone talks about Stanford joining the ACC for volleyball purposes, but SMU is no slouch. I mean, they’re not the best program in college volleyball good, but they’re going to add to the competitiveness of the conference for sure.

SMU’s surgeon is really good. is surgeon synonymous with right side now? If hornshouse23 says so. Although I don’t think of Fingall as a surgeon, that’s for sure.

I always prefer when a team we might face in round 2 looks good in round 1. Seems like the opposite has happened where the favorite and eventual winner of the first match does not look good, but then do a complete turnaround in round 2 against us. UCLA comes to mind from a few years ago.

is surgeon synonymous with right side now? If hornshouse23 says so. Although I don’t think of Fingall as a surgeon, that’s for sure. SMU’s right side is good, but she’s incredibly streaky and sometimes completely disappears. I’m much more afraid of Clothier and the ever consistent Wheeler

Texas State is doing a pretty good job at making SMU look good though imo SMU’s big strength is they don’t let balls hit the floor and they win in transition. That can translate, when being terminal or blocking real well doesn’t.
