If AU knows they’re gimmicky and are willing to commit to being off-season, I think it’s a good thing

the Italian outside pool might be worse than turkey. Its soooo bad that I literally laughed out loud when I saw avid 2.0 make that list yesterday I'm kinda joking, but not really. Italians lead the charge on VolleyData and that seeped into the women's game as the pool of female athletes became more physically talented. It lead to decreased emphasis on fundamentals like ball control (a bit of a generalization, but I think there's some connection there). Now, Italy has setters who can't set and liberos that can't pass. lol If you want to see outsides who can pass and attack, watch the Sydney Olympic Final: If lollipop serves like that one you linked were coming over regularly, today's players would pass really well too!

They suck anyway. Except Queen Fersino. She deserves the best. Brazil, Serbia, USA, and Russia are like the only major vball countries that are doing a good job with players of multiple positions. Everyone else is a fraud. I put USA in the same category as Italy. The difference is that our pool of physically gifted female athletes is so much larger than Italy's. Russia and (by association) Serbia have long histories of training athletes and are/were less susceptible to Italy's influence (in women's volleyball). Russia tried it one Olympic cycle with Caprara in 2008 and it was a disaster. To me it's similar to what happened in women's tennis with Serena Williams. Her technique and fundamentals weren't good at all, but she was physically dominant enough to over-come it and over-power opponents. But the pool of athletes that compare to her is still very small.

Serving has definitely improved, but it's the one aspect where the ball isn't in motion immediately prior.

Without reading every post in this thread, when did Stephanie Samedy join Imoco Volley Conegliano? I try watching Highlights of matches. She does see a little playing time. She joined in like January 13

Back then Russia was considered the NT with the toughest serve, but how many real tough servers (judging with today’s eyes) did they have? Sokolova, Artamonova, Godina, stop. The other ones served feet on the ground. Cuba had only Aguero.

I thought AU was dead with everything else going on... lol no, they're moving to the fall. i know AU gets mocked. but with AU+PVF salary, that can really rival some of the euro ones, where they can get some of the better players to stay home.. will that happen in 23/24? probably not... but maybe 24/25

My point really is that passing (and setting) are skills that are much more dependent on reps than pure physical talent.
