It hurts that Illinois is just not where they need to be competitively. They haven’t capitalized on that 2018 season/tournament. And the Michigan schools have obviously been a mess. I'm surprised the Illinois fans aren't a little more feisty about how the team has performed.

I think Wisconsin is the favorite but Penn State could sneak in! I think they have best squad. Really missing another middle thought to being elite. Have the best setter and great pins. Defense is always great. I think the are 2nd and could take the throne if anyone could from Wisconsin.

I'm surprised the Illinois fans aren't a little more feisty about how the team has performed. We complain quite a bit over in our Illinois thread. But, for me at least, there's a recognition that we just aren't on that level anymore. We can't recruit with the top teams and it's showing.

I don't know about threatening the top dogs but I'm very interested to see how Purdue does this year, they got some fantastic recruits! Will Chicoine make a similar impact this year like Hudson did last year? Will other freshmen step up?

haha agreed! Purdue can never get out of their own way… I mean idk if that’s true. It’s not like they are ever truly amazing and underperform. They have had some really solid to good teams lately but I wouldn’t say they are getting in their own way. They just aren’t at that level yet

I thought there already was a 2023 B1G thread, because I was looking to put this tweet in it the other day. Turns out I was just a bit ahead of myself.
Good stuff from Dave.

I like the poll that allows you to vote the order of finish 1-14. This poll is boring. Texas, I mean Wisconsin is the heavy favorite.

We’re still months away from the 2023 season, but I wanted to revive this topic and see why people’s thoughts are for the B1G next year. Had way too much time on my hands and made a pre-season write up.
Tier 1: These are all very likely locks for the top four spots. I think they can finish in any order tbh, but it’ll likely be the following:
1. Wisconsin - the reigning champs are experiencing the least turnover of the top teams, returning all but one starter. While Jade Demps chose to transfer to LSU, Carter Booth and TTA are huge pickups for the Badgers and their front line will be excellent. The biggest questions are setting and passing, but a full season plus the spring of running the 6-2 should give them more confidence running it again next year. Maybe Sheffield will learn his lesson and use a DS (Reed/Damrow) for either Franklin or TTA? 2. Penn State - KSC had a good showing in her first season and Penn State has so far won the transfer portal this offseason. With all of the transfers, I see the biggest question mark for the Nittany Lions being team chemistry. Podraza is a very good setter and had great chemistry with the OSU squad, but she worked with the same hitter for 3 years. How will she fare with a new lineup with only a few weeks to develop her connections? Special area of concern: Podraza’s serve… 3. Nebraska: a wealth of talent and probably the deepest all-around bench in the conference. However, they have a very young roster and I think their biggest struggle will be on-court leadership. We’ve seen freshman-centric teams have stellar seasons before, but they often had a senior leader guiding the ship. Without that senior leadership, which of the Husker juniors will we see step up to the plate and be the emotional core of the team? 4. Minnesota: a team with huge potential but a lot of questions. The Gophers picked up Murr from the transfer portal, but lost huge pieces in Wenaas and Booth. Wucherer and Landfair have the potential to be one of the best outside duos in the country, but they’ve been plagued by injuries throughout their time at Minnesota. Will they be able to stay healthy throughout the season? K Cook is an excellent coach who can do great things with a roster like Minnesota’s but how will he fare with a roster of players he didn’t recruit? Will the second portal period bring them the depth at middle and back row they desperately need?
Tier 2: these teams should make the tournament and can definitely cause some upsets, but the theme of this tier is player experience.
5. Purdue: they’re bringing back a lot of excellent pieces and Shondell has proven that he’s a great coach. Chicone could potentially edge out the Nebraska freshmen for conference freshman of the year if they run her for 6 rotations. However, with 11 underclassman on their roster and 7 players either graduating or transferring, there are a lot of questions about depth and experience for the Boilermakers. Will we see the same young Purdue team from this last year (which swept Minnesota but then was swept by Maryland), or will Shondell coach his team to another elite 8 appearance? 6. Ohio State: the Buckeyes finally got over their Sweet Sixteen hump last year and raked up several conference and national accolades to go along with it. That was last year, and 5 of the regular starters have chosen to transfer (props to JFO for honoring the scholarship promises to her recruits and incoming freshman). Like with Purdue, the biggest question surrounding Ohio State is experience. JFO’s proven that she’s a top coach and OSU should finish in the top half, but will OSU’s ascent to the top of the B1G be hindered by the young roster? 7. Illinois: an injury-plagued season kept the Illini out of the tournament last season, but I think a good season is on the horizon. Raina Terry was a contender for conference player of the year last year and Kennedy Collins coming back for her COVID year is a big boon for Coach Tamas’ team. The theme of this tier is inexperience, and Illinois having half of their roster be freshman could pose some challenges down in big moments. Can Tamas coach Illinois back to the tournament and, if so, how far can they go?
Tier 3: these are teams that don’t have the depth of the higher theirs, but have shown flashes of brilliance this last year and could be bubble teams come tournament time
8. Indiana: In spite of Uncle Fester, the Hoosiers had some great wins to close out the season. Their aggressive serving (when over the net) caused chaos across the B1G and Camryn Haworth made a name for herself with her national player of the week award. With the success of last season under their belts, will the Hoosiers make their way back to the tournament, or will they land one too many serves into the net? 9. Maryland: the graduation of Rainelle Jones and the pending transfer of Milan Gomillion hurt the Terps, but they’ve been causing a growing number of upsets over the last few years. The Terps return several starting players whose experience will be key to their success, and Coach Hughes has shown that he can make a top blocking team year-in and year-out. Will Maryland’s monstrous blocking lead them to a post-season appearance, or will the Terps hit a wall of their own? 10. Michigan: I’m excited to see what Erin Virtue can do at Michigan, but there will likely be some bumps in the road in her first year in Ann Arbor. With three impact players transferring out and a small spring roster, depth across all positions looks to be the biggest question. Will Coach Virtue see the same first-year success as JFO and KSC did, or will the Wolverine’s rebuild be a brick-by-brick process? 11. Northwestern: after a hot start to the season last year, the flames were snuffed by costly injuries. As multiple impact starters (including the program-defining TTA) opt to test their luck at other universities, Coach Davis will have quite the job on his hands. Will the Wildcats be able to build on last years success, or was the lightning released from the bottle too early?
Tier 4: not making the tournament, but may cause some headaches if the stars align
12. Iowa: the Hawkeyes had a good end to last season and gave Purdue and Penn State some problems. Will Iowa be able to build on their moral victories and break into the top 10 in the B1G? 13. Rutgers: the Scarlet Knights showed progress last year, getting their second-ever sweep in B1G play. Can Coach Hickey put the pieces together to bring Rutgers out of the conference basement? 14. Michigan State: Iosia is a good Libero, but multiple players will be transferring out of Coach Johnson’s program. Will the Spartans have another rough year ahead of them, or can Coach Johnson bring about the success she saw at Illinois State?

I think every team has question marks at the setter position and that could really factor in on who has success and who struggles.
