Someone prior to the tournament started commented on how tough the B1G’s serving was and I definitely know we have some great serving teams but to watch Penn State and Purdue win matches on acing liberos shocked me. Anyone know how many aces total for the B1G so far this tournament? Minnesota had 9 aces in a sweep over Utah State. They switched their starting libero after the first two sets.

five words you don’t hear very often “Emily Ehman said it best” I don’t feel like Nebraska “dominated” the Big Ten. Their league schedule was not that tough. This is actually funny. Their not so tough schedule saw them play the second best team twice, the third best team twice, the fourth best on The road only, and the fifth best team twice. You’re either clueless or suggesting they won a league that wasn’t very tough.

I do feel like the high level serving of the conference only benefits teams once tournament play starts. In the big ten Minnesota looks like they don’t know how to SR but maybe against lesser serving teams they will pass well

The only other team with two players in the top ten is Michigan. The serve receive may be bad but they were one of the tougher serving teams in the big ten this year.

Guess I didn’t realize, I knew Grote’s was a tough server but I must have been blinded by the rest of Landfair’s unfortunate play to see she was succeeding behind the endline

The B1G has an 8-0 record in the tournament so far. Not bad for a conference that is "down" this season.
Edit: Adding the two future conference teams (USC & Oregon) would push the record to 11-0.

So far I've watched at least part of every B1G playoff match and it is very clear that both B1G serving and B1G blocking is just killing their opponents. They're not used to seeing the speed and power of both. The rumors of the B1G being down are premature and overstated. The eye test metric is a whole lot more accurate than the RPI test metric at the end of the B1G season. There are at least a couple more B1G teams that could have served and blocked some of these teams off the floor.

Big is 6-0 in the tournament I believe. 8-0 actually (2x each for Wisconsin, Purdue, and Penn State, and 1x for Nebraska and Minnesota) But this, in itself, isn’t “impressive”. The Big 10 can be down this year relative to the field and still have a of number of good teams in it (which it does). Nebraska and Wisconsin were regional seeds and Purdue a 3 seed, these teams SHOULD be undefeated through the first two rounds. Penn State and Kansas were 5/4 and the match was decided by deuce in the 5th set, with Kansas outscoring Penn State for the match. The 4/5 matches are designed to pit two relatively even teams against each other and that is what we got, it was a statistical tie. Per the results, the only thing that is objectively “impressive”, so far, is by how much Minnesota beat Utah State. But subjectively, this is what should have happened, in the first round, for a team like Minnesota. Minnesota started the year ranked in the top 10, and has not one but two #1 ranked recruits on the pin (including the reigning Big 10 player of the year), and senior multi year all conference players at setter and libero. Minnesota playing well this year isn’t surprising, Minnesota doing poorly this year was the surprising part.

nah, a 5th upsetting a 4th on 4th's home court is impressive.

Minnesota playing well this year isn’t surprising, Minnesota doing poorly this year was the surprising part. I’d argue that Penn State beating Kansas is pretty impressive. Kansas has only lost once at home this season: in week 2 against Purdue in a deuce 5th set. Kansas was not going to be an easy opponent, especially at home. Penn State was able to stay composed after getting decimated in the fourth set and being down in the 5th in a raucous environment. Purdue and Wisconsin hosted, which is definitely an easier path, but given Purdue 1) being very young and 2) being Purdue, a loss to Marquette was certainly possible. They showed a level of composure in their tight sets that not many young teams have. Wisconsin did what they had to do and responded well after being pushed in the first set by Miami. Minnesota is a team that seems to have caused a lot of controversy on this board, but their win showed why they deserved to be in the tournament. I’ll be watching their match today to see how they look in their rematch with Creighton. Nebraska won, but it wasn’t impressive, so I’ll give you that…

Why are you putting impressive in quotes when you're the only one who described it as such lol. Things seem to be clicking for the five tourney teams at the right time, in particular after some iffy Purdue, PSU and MN starts to the year. Not sure about impressed, because I think it's fully in this group's potential, but will certainly be happy if we manage five of the Sweet Sixteen spots. Edit: welp nevermind, I guess some folk are impressed l o l

It’s going to be a pain when these Washington fans are participating even more in BIG threads after their years of obnoxious trolling.
