It's an interesting balance. I want this pro league to succeed so it's exciting for some of the top Americans to play in it. However, if we want to win another gold at the Olympics or World Championships, playing in a shortened, less-competitive league doesn't help. US Men's soccer has been dealing with this. It's great that the MLS exists, but it still seems important that the best US soccer players play in Europe. I would think Karch still wants top athletes to be in Europe, although he may not say that publicly. Over time, can the league get good enough that it's better for Americans to stay here? I hope so! But it won't start that way. Edit: this isn't a Hilley-specific comment. She didn't even make the large VNL roster. Just a general thought. on the counter, I think it will (or can) help keep talent playing... they dont need to be NTers, but good enough players to have the league be above Puerto Rico and challenge some of the non Italy/Turkey Euros leagues and maybe they'll find a gem to help expand the NT pool. like Hilley, Edmond, Rosenthal, Stone, etc would all be done playing without the league (or AU)... all four of them could be playing for top teams in Germany/France/wherever right now if they wanted to. There are some NT members interested in PVF. So I guess we'll see. Hypothetical question. If an American league was able to attract all of the best American players (like the NFL for example), how would it be competitively against the current top pro leagues?

Probably very competitive. if they had to be balanced and distribute talent evenly (a la NWSL/other american sports).. probably not.

A US domestic league would compare very favorably to the existing international leagues. The pool of athletes, with the existing NCAA participants, dwarfs the talent pool available in almost every other country or even every other continent, even Europe. The advantage the US has is that it is a single country, versus the multiple smaller countries that comprise Europe (with Russia being geographically larger, but still less than a third of the US population). The US league could eventually expand to a Federation competition like the CEV does and include all the NORCECA members (Canada, PR, Cuba, Mexico), which greatly expands it base. It would also become an attractive option for some of the best international players currently competing in the CEV/international leagues world-wide.

There are some NT members interested in PVF. So I guess we'll see. I’m with you on this take. There are a lot of players who want to keep going but just don’t want to have to play internationally to do so, just look at Hentz. Leagues like PVF and LOVB will give players a domestic option and help with a lot of the depth issues we’re seeing on the NT level. I think that the main thing that could make or break this league will be the compensation packages. From what I’ve read on here, quite a few of the euro leagues include living expenses and vehicles along with salary. If the US leagues don’t offer similar packages, they’re not going to attract a lot of players who can get better contracts elsewhere. I honestly think anyone joining PVF is kind of killing any chance of being a main NT competitor. Which is totally fine, there are some really talented players joining which is exciting, but I think this league benefits players that know they are not going to make major USNT rosters so they don't feel the need to train abroad. I would be shocked if any prominent NT players join this league. It seems more like an extension of the NCAA, which as we know is not at all the same level as international volleyball.

From what I understand PVF pays better than 90% of the overseas teams and for a much shorter season. I think people will be surprised how many top players will pay in this league.
