I think it's more likely Sonnett plays CB. Neither option fills me with confidence. The midfield was bad in Tokyo. Playing Horan deeper with Ertz might help, then you just let Rose and the three forwards cook. I can't see how Ertz can be anything close to "2019 Julie Ertz" who was arguably the best player in the world. The question is how much can she be? If she's 85% of that peak, that's still pretty great. That Netherlands game is going to tell us a lot about the group. It should be an extremely fun tournament to watch- a lot of the big teams are a mess this summer. Pretty wide open, if you ask me. Well, Ertz was also probably at 80% in Tokyo, but agree with your points.

Here are the current odds at DraftKings to win the tournament:
USA +250 England +350 Spain +650 Germany +650 France +750 Australia +1200 Sweden +1400 Netherlands +1600 Brazil +2500 Canada +2500
Everyone else is +4000 or worse.

One thing that bugs me about the USWNT equal pay lawsuit was all the riffing about how they constantly outperformed the men's team yet were being paid less and deserved to be paid as much as the men. But if they were so much more successful and garnered more attention why didn't they seek more than the men? Shouldn't the goal be to be compensated for your value, not compensated to be equivalent to someone else, especially if that person is less successful?

My last Women's World Cup was in the 1990s when Brandy Chastain took off her shirt. That was so fun to watch. And wish my arms looked like that.

Interesting. Had no idea the US team had come down to the pack. I assume they were better than even money favorites in most of the recent world cups.

But the rest of the world has come up by investing more in development and professional leagues for women's soccer. There is a lot more parity these days.

Shouldn't the goal be to be compensated for your value, not compensated to be equivalent to someone else, especially if that person is less successful? The issue was about more than just straight pay. It was things like the women being flown economy while the men were flown first class -- stuff like that. And the pay scales reward both teams for advancing in the World Cup, so presumably if they advance farther they will get paid more. In fact, the women actually were paid more than the men over the years when the men did not make it to the World Cup, but not as much as they would have been paid if they had had the deal the men had for the same performance. It's of course complicated by the fact that FIFA pays out so much more for the Men's World Cup than the Women's, meaning USA Soccer has to make up the difference. And there were arguments that the women negotiated the deal they had which gave them more guaranteed pay but less incentive pay. In fact, they lost that part of their lawsuit in 2019, precisely because of that factor. However, the unequal working conditions part was still alive in the courts when the parties ended up agreeing on the "everything the same" settlement in 2022.

Also, misogyny still exists -- "we deserve more than the men" would have likely been at least twice as controversial. "Equal pay" is much more palatable.

But the rest of the world has come up by investing more in development and professional leagues for women's soccer. There is a lot more parity these days. I don't think the US has ever been so much better than the rest of the world as to be better than even money favorites at a major tournament (Women's World Cup or Summer Olympics), though I could be wrong. There have always been some other strong countries (the US didn't win the World Cup in 1995, 2003, 2007 and 2011). I think it's inevitable that Europe will dominate women's soccer at some point. I think their development system is clearly superior for producing elite soccer players (as seen on the men's side). But many traditional powers neglected their women for decades, so they've had some catching up to do. I'm not sure how long that will take, as those countries investing in their women is a pretty recent development. But I think it's only a matter of time.

World Cup, whatever. Now, if you're in Wellington, hit up Bin 44 in the harbor - Queens Wharf area - great cocktails, beer, and wine selection. A very short walk from there is Shed 5, probably the best seafood place in town (a little pricey, though). The Arborist is a great rooftop spot for drinks/food.
Oh, yeah! Duke of Wellington pub - maybe a 10-minute walk from the stadium - I'm assuming the matches are being played at WestPac (it may be called something else by now), pretty much the one and only venue in Wellington big enough to hold an event like a World Cup.
Wellington is a cool town, you guys will enjoy it.

We have most of a Wednesday, all day Thursday (match day), and all day Friday (recovery from match day) in Wellington before taking the ferry to Picton.
