I saw no hobbits in New Zealand. I have seen a troll in W. Nebraska, though. Feels a bit gratuitous, but I laughed out loud. Oh, it was a cheap shot, for sure. Anyway, back to the World Cup! I put a little money on Australia at +1000. Home field and all… and who doesn’t like a team called the Matilda’s?

Based on my initial glance at DraftKings, I think Sweden at +1400 looks pretty interesting. That seems low compared to their No. 3 FIFA ranking, but I'd need to do some research. It seems like there could be value on Canada and Brazil, which are both +2500. And Australia at +1200 with the home field seems like a decent bet.

I thought Canada was interesting as well, but the fact they are in a nasty labor dispute with their Federation concerns me some. I don’t know how or if that affects Team Canada at the moment, but I might be more inclined to put a small wager on them if that gets sorted out before they leave.

Sweden likely faces Netherlands or USA in the Round of 16, which is a tough draw.

One thing that bugs me about the USWNT equal pay lawsuit was all the riffing about how they constantly outperformed the men's team yet were being paid less and deserved to be paid as much as the men. But if they were so much more successful and garnered more attention why didn't they seek more than the men? Shouldn't the goal be to be compensated for your value, not compensated to be equivalent to someone else, especially if that person is less successful? The issue was about more than just straight pay. It was things like the women being flown economy while the men were flown first class -- stuff like that. And the pay scales reward both teams for advancing in the World Cup, so presumably if they advance farther they will get paid more. In fact, the women actually were paid more than the men over the years when the men did not make it to the World Cup, but not as much as they would have been paid if they had had the deal the men had for the same performance. It's of course complicated by the fact that FIFA pays out so much more for the Men's World Cup than the Women's, meaning USA Soccer has to make up the difference. And there were arguments that the women negotiated the deal they had which gave them more guaranteed pay but less incentive pay. In fact, they lost that part of their lawsuit in 2019, precisely because of that factor. However, the unequal working conditions part was still alive in the courts when the parties ended up agreeing on the "everything the same" settlement in 2022. I actually had no issue with the game pay disparity because both parties received exactly what they bargained for. To retroactively try to assign yourself a different deal because you would have made more under it is absurd. It's trying to assume all the benefit with none of the risk. I also don't think it's just for the women to receive bonuses in regard to men's FIFA money. But, as you state, since that is controlled by FIFA I'm not really sure there's a solution for equality. As to travel, playing locations, training opportunities, etc., I see no reason why those shouldn't be similar as available.

Mrs. Merv and I are on our way tomorrow morning. Catching a flight to Dallas, then DFW-Melbourne and Melbourne-Auckland. If all goes well, we'll arrive in time for the NZ Warriors-Canberra Raiders NRL match on Friday night. Met a guy over LinkedIn who is hooking us up with tickets.
We're seeing USA-Vietnamn, Italy-Argentina, and USA-Netherlands before hopping down to the south island for the remainder of the trip.

I went to the send-off game in San Jose (bought my partner tickets for his birthday) -- enjoy the trip, I'm so jealous!

I'm going to the opener tomorrow (NZ-Norway), as well as USA-Vietnam and all the knock-out matches in Auckland (round of 16, QF and semi). Merv, I hope the weather plays nice for you - we've had a very wet 2023 so far!
