So I hate penalty shoot outs, but at least that one had all kinds of drama. Apparently the longest one in WC history (men or women) with 20 kicks taken. Amazing that none of them were complete off frame misses - all were either made, saved or hit the post.

I was getting very tired, so I turned it off after regular time, which was like 3 AM my time (I had to stay up that late anyway). Scoreless draws decided in penalties are my absolute least favorite type of match anyway, so I don't think I missed out on much. Actually, based on the other comments, it sounds like an entertaining shootout, but it's still a shootout. In the other match, England defeated Colombia 2-1. The semifinals are now set.

USA should hire Wiegman.

I feel like she already has a better job, but I guess you might as well call and see. I believe she's signed with England through 2025.

I mean, I think England has a brighter future than the US in women's soccer, and they also have lower expectations, at least for now. As far as I know, the England team didn't make a commercial implying that they were basically a lock to win this World Cup the way that the USWNT did. If you take the US job, you're probably going to get fired if you don't win the World Cup. Wiegman is already a legend in England for winning Euro 2022.

Forgot to mention that in addition to all of the drama during the shootout itself, France also subbed their GK just before OT ended specifically for the PKs. Pretty sure she'd only had a handful of senior international caps (3?). Though this move often backfires, have to say, she was excellent.

I watched England vs Colombia live last night as well after the marathon that was Australia vs France. Colombia actually scored first, just near the end of the first 45 - an impressive looping shot that looked to catch Earps a bit off guard. England then managed to tie it up in the dying moments of added time (about 7 minutes later) when the Colombian GK spilled the ball and chaos ensued. With about 20 minutes left Colombia had to sub their GK - initially looked like she was just having a contact lens issue, but seems she may have been playing with an eye infection that affected her vision?? And overall the ref was rubbish at keeping the physical side of the game under control - some real hockey style body checks, etc.

World Cup semis start overnight with Sweden and Spain. I thought about watching this match, but a 2 AM start time means I probably wouldn't get to bed until like 4:30 or 5 AM, which will just wreak havoc on my sleep schedule, so I think I'll pass. I predict Spain to advance.

Never easy putting soccer in a stadium made for cricket (Australia are using rectangular stadiums) Edit to add - this time we are about 10 rows up from the pitch right at a corner flag. Think it's the end Spain will be defending first half.

Spain advances to the final with a 2-1 win over Sweden. All three goals were scored in the 80th minute or later.

Well that was an absolutely wild 20 minutes at Eden Park last night. The corner flag we were seated at was right where both Spain goals were celebrated/scored from, so we had a prime view of the chaos. When Spain scored at 81' to finally break the deadlock I thought, yup, that's it. Thought it was hilarious that Sweden scored not long after the Spanish keeper mysteriously needed treatment (and outrageous how unmarked Blomqvist was). Then a minute later I see Carmona right in front of us with the ball and think, why is no Swedish player challenging her, she's got so much space...and boom, goal. Would have been interesting to see what Sweden would have done had they actually been given the corner at the end (watched the replay of the end of the game this morning, and that was definitely a dive), but in the end I think the right team still won. Overall, Spain was best on the night.
