I don’t know how you can seriously place a program that hasn’t made it past the second round since 2017 in “tier 2”. I take a long-term view of what I think a program has been and is capable of being - and do not just look at the recent past. USC should and can be among the elite programs in my opinion. But I do agree that the lack of success on the floor over the past several years is putting doubt into that next tier status. Anyway - USC continues to get top 10 overall recruits - and adding someone of Messer's caliber isn't surprising to me at all. This is a program that can be a force in VB very quickly. Wisconsin is not in the same tier as USC. Wisconsin has been in the final four three of the last four years, and in the Sweet 16 since Kelly Sheffield was hired in 2013. They are in the Stanford, Nebraska, Texas tier. Louisville should be in that tier also, at this point I would think.

Louisville with 0 nattys and 2 FF appearances absolutely does not belong in the Stanford Texas Nebraska tier oml

Talking about tiers is dumb ☺️ Back during the Middle Ages, church scholars used to debate how many angels could fit on the head of a pin. Was that dumb? Maybe. However, I suppose they found it to be an amusing way to pass the time, not so different to Volleytalk posters debating "tiers". It's just an amusing way to pass the time.

Even before that, back when I was growing up and google didn’t exist, it was amazing how many stupid conversations my friends and I could get into when none of us knew anything about the subject. Especially if some level of drugs/alcohol was also involved. Frankly, it was fun. Don’t remember any angels on the head of pins conversations going on, though.

If I was a head coach - and could choose any program to lead for the next 15-20 years and winning was the sole objective. There is no chance I would choose Wisconsin over Stanford, Texas, and Nebraska. There is also no chance I would choose Louisville over USC, Florida or Wisconsin. The choice between USC and Wisconsin wouldn't be all that clear.

Talking about tiers is dumb ☺️ In terms of recruiting and commitments and what programs have an edge - it seems rather important and actually relevant to this this thread.

This completely depends on your criteria for tiers. Are we talking about program status right now or historically? Are we talking about strength of athletic department? How much are you figuring in extraneous factors?
