Roberta should be the starter for Brazil even when Macris is healthy, IMO. China doesn't need Zhu until the Olympics. If I were Serbia and China, I would be worried about the Dutch who are trending upwards. I wouldn't rule out Dominicana or Canada either. Both teams can push the top teams. I def did not have the Netherlands medaling at a major event and being semi relevant on my 2023 bingo sheet. Especially without Buijs like wtf Hot take. Buijs was holding them back....a lot. She never learned to pass and was a constant liability for that team. Even Schoot and Knip their go to liberos for years now have been supplanted by Reesink. Marring, Jasper and Daalderop are three solid OH's. They are beyond stacked at MB with Lohuis, Timmerman and Baijens. The Rio gals have passed their prime except for maaybe Celeste Plak who is their starting OPP now. They are peaking at the perfect moment. Koslowski has been a much needed breath of fresh air for this team.

China Group: Canada, China, Czechia, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Netherlands, Serbia, Ukraine Japan Group: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Japan, Peru, Puerto Rico, Turkey ill make fancy some other time. The China group will be competitive. Zhu Ting is not on the roster for China, and while China did improved alot in the VNL finals with notable wins over Brazil, US and Poland, throughout the preliminaries, they were unsteady and suffered a string of losses. This raises questions on Cai Bin's ability. This opens up the field. Serbia also had a lackluster VNL, but I am betting they will be trying to do a lot better in the qualification tournament. Guidetti will be feeling the pressure to do better...or else. DR, Netherlands will also be hoping to do well. And given DR's win over the US in the 2023 NORCECA Continental Championship, they are actually in a pretty strong position. Canada also has an outside shot. Realistically not a very high chance for Winzer's girls, but...I won't write them off, they do have potential. I am curious about a team not in those two groups, Italy. I heard Egonu won't be on the roster for the Olympic qualification tournament. Anyone can confirm that? If true, that will have a substantial impact on their performance obviously... if there were questions about Cai Bin's abilities as a result of earlier losses in the preliminaries, why didn't subsequent wins over Brazil, US and Poland answer those questions? i have no horse in the race but I find the intense criticism (in Chinese forums not necessarily from you) of Cai Bin interesting. it's not like there's a clear alternative to Cai Bin. They took silver without Ting and the Chinese audience think Cai's a total loser. I just don't get it.

After the VNL, Chinese fans on my WeChat Chinese volleyball group seem to have been warming up to Cai Bin. Personally, I have followed him for many years as he coached Jiangsu. I know that I'm in the minority on this site, but I think that he's not a bad coach. I appreciate that he calmly allows his to play with joy.

They took silver without Ting and the Chinese audience think Cai's a total loser. I just don't get it. If you recall the 2008 Olympics when China was playing for the bronze medal, local station decided to show a round robin match of another sport instead. It’s gold or nothing!

This is why whoever assumes the position of coach of the national women volleyball team has a mountain of pressure on his or her back. That being said, as Steve pointed out, some Chinese fans are indeed warming up to Cai Bin, or at least are a little less harsh on him. But overall, fans are still skeptical of Cai Bin, unless he wins an international championship (which Cai has yet to do), will fans give the coach the respect he or she may have deserved.

This is random - but do Chinese fans tend to support (or despise) any other national teams more than another? Do they hate USA more/less than Brazil? Japan/Korea? Obviously China having probably some of the largest fanbases in the world in raw numbers this may not be easy to determine, but, I know you say you read a lot of their comments/feedback so I figured you might know.
