Watched Nebraska in person 7 times and the transformation from Utah State until now has been seismic. And I have only watched Stanford on video and television. As of today, I don’t see Nebraska winning this match-we don’t pass well enough-yet. . It would be rather remarkable if we could start 4 freshman and beat the consensus best team in 3 weeks into the season.. The challenge for Nebraska this fall season is to acclimate this elite accumulation of talent to the best D1 talent and level of play in time to compete for a national championship in December.
What Nebraska is facing on Tuesday is having a team of elite 18 and 19 year-old players against a team of elite 21 and 22 year-old players.
This is a match where no matter what happens, Nebraska wins. After Tuesday, Nebraska’s young players will have competitive experience against the level of players they will need to beat in December to win. As much as we have improved, we need to be better.
As Deion said, “we’re coming…”

Fun fact: Nebraska volleyball play-by-play guy John Baylor is a Stanford grad. So there's that. That is something I did not know.

Stanford is really promoting this match. There is an ad across the bottom of the front of the San Francisco Chronicle's Sunday sports section: They better promote it; otherwise there might be more Nebraska fans in attendance. Those Tuesday matches, even against quality opponents, haven't drawn much attendance. Also, starting time is 6PM, which doesn't give 9-to-5ers much time to get there. And of course it is on ESPN.

This could be a preliminary to a match in the Finals. Stanford has great size, experience, and more depth than in the past. They also have played a strong pre-conference schedule. Nebraska has size and athletes to match but has not faced an opponent with similar athleticism. Both teams will benefit. While either team could lose matches in their conference, neither team will face a team with more talent. Stanford gets an A plus for scheduling, partly the advantage of not having classes until later in the semester. Nebraska may have the advantage of playing in a stronger conference, particularly with Wisconsin who may be the favorite to repeat in the BIG. I don't think winning or losing this match is as important as finding out things about your team against great talent. Stanford already knows some of those things. Nebraska is about to find out.

Between no students being on campus, Tuesday being a big night for HS girls to all have matches of their own, easy access on live TV (or DVR), and the early start time, yeah -- I fear it'll end up much closer to 2,003 people than 92,003. Saying that, it should be a terrific match to watch for all the reasons already mentioned.

Stanford being better tested, and Huskers traveling for the first time (midweek) give Stanford an advantage. Should be a doozy.

Our home opener against Florida, a 6PM Tuesday match drew 1,859. (I suspect a large number wished results-wise they had stayed home.) This past Friday against tOSU drew 2,032 and the next evening against Minny drew 3,403. (These -,-03 figures make me wonder about the AI impact.) The reality is that those numbers are going to be as many (ballpark)as the Card will draw, period. Cf: SU at Rice (Houston) this past week on a Tuesday drew 1,504.
