Welcome to the Battle of I-94, 2023 Edition. Wisconsin and Marquette will attempt to set a new indoor volleyball match attendance record at Milwaukee's Fiserv Forum. Both teams are coming off of sweep weeks last week - Wisconsin defeated Arizona and Miami, but Marquette lost to Pitt and Tennessee. Will the Golden Eagles be able to get their groove back? Or will the Badgers continue to dominate?

The Fiserv Forum, home of the Milwaukee Bucks and Marquette Golden Eagles basketball teams, is located at 1111 Vel R. Phillips Avenue in Milwaukee. The street's namesake, Velvalea "Vel" Hortense Rodgers Phillips, was born in Milwaukee in 1924. Her senior year in high school, she entered a speaking contest and won the prize of a college scholarship to the school of her choice. She selected Howard University in Washington, DC, but upon graduating she returned to Milwaukee and began volunteering with the NAACP. Soon after, she and her husband moved to Madison to attend the University of Wisconsin Law School. Phillips graduated in 1951, the first Black woman to graduate from law school in Wisconsin. Five years later she became the first Black person and first woman elected to the Milwaukee City Council. | Vel Phillips raising her hand to speak during a Milwaukee City Council meeting. During her time on the City Council, Phillips fought tirelessly for fair housing policies to protect minorities from discrimination when buying or renting homes. She brought national attention to Milwaukee’s civil rights movement when she organized community members to demonstrate for more than 200 days in support of fair housing legislation. She also mentored baseball player Hank Aaron during his time playing for the Milwauee Braves, educating him on Milwaukee's history of legalized discrimination in housing and education. Phillips instructed Aaron on how to use his star power to advance the causes of the civil rights movement. | Vel Phillips and Father James Groppi at a 1967 fair housing rally at St. Boniface Church in Milwaukee Image credit: Wisconsin Black Historical Society/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel |
Phillips served on the City Council until 1971, when she was appointed to the Milwaukee County Circuit Court, becoming the first woman judge in Milwaukee and the first Black judge in Wisconsin. She made history yet again in 1978, when she became the first woman and first Black person elected as Secretary of State. After leaving office, she served as a lecturer at UW-Milwaukee and a visiting professor at Carroll University and the University of Wisconsin Law School. In 2002 she was named Distinguished Professor of Law at Marquette University Law School. She remained active in civil rights and politics until her death in April of 2018, just a few months before the Fiserv Forum was opened. | Vel Phillips speaking at the 2007 March on Milwaukee Image credit: Voces de la Frontera |

Within the past year or so, Madison Memorial High School in Madison was renamed Vel Phillips High.

I have two extra tickets available for the match. Third row of the second deck, section 222. Should be "50 yard line" unless they offset the court some direction.
I don't really know what second deck looks like at Fiserv, never been there. I have them up on TickPick right now, but can pull them off if somebody wants them. Face value was something like $8, and VolleyTalk people get them for face.
Let me know. (The hidden cost is you have sit next to me.)

All match thread makers have my utmost respect, but your match threads are so often special. This is the best one you’ve ever done. Thank you for bringng to my attention this accomplished lady. And of course she has deep connections to both universities.

BTW, I really thought Marquette was ready to take their program to another level after last year’s Sweet 16. A match I was looking forward to in the preseason now looks like a looming blowout. There’s time for Marquette to right their ship before Big East play begins, but this doesn’t seem like the match it’s gojng to occur.

It is pretty much the same lineup that played at the Field House last year, isn't it?

That’s what I’ve grabbed for a couple Bucks games in the past.

Both opponents a lot more cohesive, better connections, better floor D. Granted both opponents are pretty darn good but Marquette just looked off.

Marquette definitely had high hopes for this season, knowing how the outcome of their previous season was. They are just missing size and are feeling the pressure of getting ranked so high. Last year, they were the underdogs and had such a unique style of play that nobody was prepared for. Now, they have a target on their back, and still with a young core, they still have a lot of hope for Big East season, but since they started their season with higher competition, they haven't had time focus on their true game. I doubt Theis will switch things up, knowing the potential of this team. With this game though, it's going to be very tough.

I learned this over the summer, and mentioned it on VT once already (I think): During the day, we shrink. We get shorter. Gravity pulls on us, the discs in the spine draw closer together, and we get shorter. Estimates vary, but the 'average' is around 3 cm, or an inch. Then overnight we 'stretch' back out, and do it all over the next day. NASA calls our true height our "space height". Is Franklin 6'3" or 6'4"? Not sure, what time is it? :-)

Within the past year or so, Madison Memorial High School in Madison was renamed Vel Phillips High. Vel Phillips MEMORIAL HS, to be clear - everybody just calls it “Memorial,” so they didn’t want to change that. It’s now just a memorial to someone else. UW Madison also has a residence hall named for her.
