Honestly, I don't think 17,000 fans would really move the needle much outside of volleyball circles. But if you get 92,000 fans, that's a number so large that non-volleyball fans will take note. One thing since the article talked about attendance: BYU also broke its attendance record with 5528 against Utah. |

I think it’s only bad if we treat it like that. Volleyball Day received worldwide attention. The new indoor record should be lauded by all of us interested in the growth of the sport. You know those kinds of attendance numbers are making an impact with decision makers at networks. They need to show growth and I’d say volleyball is one of the sports - if not THE sport - that shows the most potential. The Marquette-Wisconsin attendance numbers are critical to that story. I’d also give some significance to the 12k watching Louisville-Kentucky in Yum Arena. To have a packed house in a larger venue outside of Big 10 participation is HUGE to me! And as bbg points out, BYU set their own record in their own rivalry game with Utah. I look forward to this spreading to other areas of the country. In any case, I don’t think of the match in Fiserv as an afterthought at all. |

Volleyball "growth" will be achieved when 5-figure crowds are NOT a big deal. “Growth” inherently is never “achieved” by definition. At this point it’s something to celebrate. As you’re saying, at some point it won’t be. We’re not at that point. |

Please, let's agree to stop using the terms "indoor record" and "outdoor record". There is no official designation that I know of between indoor and outdoor in the record book. The University of Nebraska system and Wayne State went to great effort and expense to insure that the stadium matches were played under the NCAA Women's Volleyball rules. It is clear at this point that Volleyball attendance numbers in Wisconsin, Nebraska and a few other places are determined by venue size not fan interest and that is always good. What Wisconsin-Marquette accomplished this week can be celebrated without intentionally or not, implying the NCAA Volleyball attendance record was set. |

It was a great event for Nebraska, but a volleyball match in a football stadium that was put there with the express intent to set the attendance record is different than indoor matches. I'm not suggesting that it wasn't a real match in terms of the standings or whatever, but that doesn't mean it's not different than pretty much all other matches. And to be fair to Lee, he didn't say that Nebraska doesn't have the overall attendance record--they do. He was talking about the indoor record to draw that distinction. |

I edited my original post to explain my reasoning. You don't have to agree, but I'm not changing my opinion. Nebraska has the record, and good for them. But that doesn't mean that the indoor record is no longer important. Frankly, it's disingenuous to not acknowledge that a match played in a football stadium is an extreme outlier from pretty much all other matches. Edit: The reason your Cowboys/Chiefs analogy doesn't work is because Nebraska volleyball doesn't play all its home matches at Memorial. |

I don’t understand the Nebraska fan insistence on this. Do Nebraska fans feel like they didn’t receive enough recognition for Volleyball Day? Or that they won’t continue to receive it in the future? Is this going to lead to a wave of volleyball matches in outdoor venues? And then to make a comparison to NFL football. What does that have to do with the price of tea in China? |
