^ Samoan Pipeline - what about Suliane Davis - 2025 OH, still uncommitted. Suliane Davis is half Tongan, not Samoan. Got that wrong. Well, a Pacific Islander pipeline...

How is her physical condition? Has she fully recovered from injury? Is she in top athletic condition? She looks to be struggling to just get her feet to the ball. She barely made an easy one step off blocker dig. Big arm, but that’s not enough. Yeah, she used to move better, so I'm assuming injury recovery still, but new setter this year, so possibly that is part of it too. Regardless, she isn't effective enough against this team to be playing imo. I'd rather have Barton and Wilmes on the left. She was always pure power and never a flyer, but she worked really hard to improve her movement and passing. I thought her injury was pretty severe and wondered whether she would even be back ready for the start of the season. They must really need her, and I am not going to criticize her for not being 100% at the beginning of the season. Wazzou is this year's San Diego. The stars lined up to keep some 5th year players and bring in some transfers for one big run, then next year will be lots of rebuilding. They have 13 players in their 4th or 5th year. That is a crazy amount of experience that will be mostly gone next year. Washington was that way to a point last year as well. What do you expect when you lose your 5th year all everything setter, who was adept at spreading the ball around including holding the block with your 4th and 5th year middles (both gone) and all together 76% of your offense is gone for that new setter? There are going to be growing pains.

I agree with those folks who are basically saying that everyone needs to reset expectations for the Huskies this year. It's just not a normal year and it's up to Leslie and the rest of the coaching staff to get back to a "Husky normal" in the next few years. But we should all be patient and give her the chance -- it's going to take a while.
Meanwhile, what can and should UW be doing right now to develop players and set the table for better times?
First, recruiting has to be a primary focus, including and especially recruiting through the portal and recruiting some international players. I know this isn't rocket science but UW really needs promising, athletic 6-rotation hitters. Bush will hopefully help a lot in this regard next year, assuming a full recovery.
Second, UW needs to focus on developing the skills of young, promising players like Barton, Hani, Wessels, and Huard. Let's also remember that Wilson and Wilmes still have at least two years of eligibility after this season.
Third, let's not keep flipping back and forth between a 5-1 and 6-2. The 5-1 simply works better for this team and Wilson should get the reps.
Fourth, focus on the fundamentals: serve, serve receive (especially Wilmes and Barton), and blocking (especially our young middles).
Fifth, let's set the damn middles more, even if it means forcing the issue sometimes. If we want our middles to develop as offensive players, we are going to need to set them more than 12% of the time.

I would agree with all of that...but we have to realize that you can't set the middles when we are passing so poorly in S/R. It is unreasonable to ask two players to cover the entire court in S/R vs a team like WSU. When S/R is not good, it puts a young setter in a bad spot...which puts stress on the set to the only option...the OH. We need to pass better to open up more options...middle, back row, dump. This worked vs LB, but will not work against an experienced high level team like WSU. Unfortunately, our options are limited and the Pac is unforgiving.

Sure, it's going to be a lot tougher against an elite team like the Cougars who can serve at a high level. But UW's passing has not been horrible in the non-conference matches this season against relatively inferior competition and -- still -- UW's middles have only been set 13.6% of the time (that stat is for all matches this season). From what I have seen, both in person and on TV, I'm pretty sure that more sets could have gone to the middle -- if that been a point of emphasis. I'm suggesting that it should be a point of emphasis going forward, recognizing that serve receive is going to be substantially less than perfect.

The player I'm hoping to see get over the hump, so to speak, is Audra Wilmes. As she goes, so go the Huskies this season.
