That is literally their job. I remember Julie Hermann at AVCA convention one year saying you talk to friends, watch visiting teams, look at results and bios and compile a list of 5-6 names for each sport to keep in your desk in case a job opens. ETSU obviously didn't have a list. Definitely didn’t have a list but their other candidate was a slam dunk and just won conference and they still chose wrong…huge issue in their hiring committee.

Referencing Julie Hermann might not be the best source with her background and history but your point is true. I would say having a short list happens more at the Power 5 level and not necessarily at most mid majors. I've been involved in a few on the hiring end of things and the majority of the time anyone who was on the "list" was crossed off immediately for various reasons.

On paper, it made some sense. Atkinson took Delaware State from 2-27 (0-10 MEAC) the year before he got there to 50-12 (23-5 MEAC) and an NCAA tournament over his last two seasons. That's a HUGE improvement in a short time. But as others have said, none of that is worth if he treats the players badly.

I had a kid who wanted to walk on at Delaware State a few years ago and she got to know the volleyball players, all of them warned her against it. So she didn't even try.

William Jewell is D2 (Missouri) and it looks like they had an interim HC this past season. William Jessup is NAIA (California). I don't know which one is open, but it would make sense for a job being held by an interim HC to be open.

I can’t believe they let Keith go! Let me get this straight. 17-12 (9-9) overall season. Best seasons in school history. Finished 8th. If the mountain west took 8 teams into the conference tourney like most conferences with 12 teams then he would’ve been in the tournament. Air Force was the only team to beat Utah State who won the regular season championship. He recruited and developed their programs only all american (I can’t imagine they have more than her). Sounds like Keith left this program better. Hope he knows that. Yah. This is a completely logical move by the Air Force. Well done. Was told that the AD told him before the season that he had to be top 8 this year.. thinking that the Mountain West took 8 to the tourney not 6. Then realized that when they didn’t make the tournament and let him go..
