You know in those pirate movies where they walk the plank into shark infested water with a sword at their back? The pirate didn't exactly kill him, but you wouldn't say the guy chose to go for a swim either... fired/quit/retired/separated sometimes they are just words. Also, the villain in the story was an assistant AD who botched the new hire. It sounds more like his arrogance and incompetence that led to the problems of 2022, than anything Wildhack, the AD, actually did. If Wildhack is blamed for anything it's having priorities other than volleyball. WVB is the 2nd or 3rd sport at some schools but at Syracuse volleyball falls behind football, both basketballs, both lacrosse teams, and of course field hockey and men's soccer won national titles recently... and I would add women's ice hockey to the list though that may be debatable. And when you realize WVB is like the 10th most important program you understand why the program lacks the time, attention, facilities, or budget necessary to succeed. This^^^^ I can’t imagine what was going through their minds during the hiring process, but unless an AD is living under a rock, they should see the potential in in volleyball right now. We know it comes down to money and volleyball can be an income producing sport before lacrosse and field hockey. Ask John Cook FWIW the gate revenue for Syracuse Lacrosse is around $40k per game and that is with attendance down by about the difference between them and #2. Nobody is saying he shouldn't be spending time on other sports, but when a head coach candidate comes in to interview for volleyball, maybe there could be more than a bump and handshake with the AD, and pronouncing a candidate's name correctly is always a nice touch.

That's a tough one. There's a reason everybody calls him Bake.

My guess is that they can't - what men's sport would they cut to balance it out? They wouldn't need to cut a men's sport, they could just add another female sport that might be cheaper than vball Such as?

Wild and Jim Dietz are terms that do not usually go together, sir. What about "wild" pregame questions of referees? Ummm....yeah, guilty as charged there, but they're always interesting hypothetical questions!

So the most impactful hire of the 2024 hiring cycle so far is a 2023 split of the indoor and sand assistant positions at UH.
Tell me if I'm missing anything... Nick Castello gives up the sand assistant duties to just coach indoor at Hawaii... So UH hires Armen Zakarian as beach assistant, vacating the head job at West Valley CC So West Valley hires Sam Crosson from Cal in August 2023 After an interim season, Cal hires Jen Malcom from UCLA and two coaches TBD UCLA needs to replace Malcom and I don't imagine they will hire a newby so that may well create more openings too.
Usually moves start at Cal and UCLA and filter down into Hawaii and JuCo and beach. This one is unique that is started with a beach postion and it's impact has gotten bigger but it may yet filter back down.

Well, the West Valley opening didn't cause Sam to leave Cal, so it's not quite seamless from sand assistant to UCLA.

Armen left West Valley for family reasons and then Sam left Cal to take that job. Probably had to do with the writing on the wall that after this past season Cal wasn't going to keep him. So he jumped on a new job where he would probably get at least another 2-3 years minimum. Once again, I doubt that AD's will be firing coaches anymore unless they have a violation on their hands.

Ummm....yeah, guilty as charged there, but they're always interesting hypothetical questions! Such as? Im always down for fun rules questions. Team A serves the ball. Team B digs it towards the net but there's no one near the ball. As it approaches the net/drops, a player from Team A reaches under the net, catches the ball, and throws it back to the server. What's the call? Would you change the call if it was 13u rather than 18s or college? We (because I asked refs) couldn't find anything in the casebook--or in the rules as written at the time. One of the officials passed it up the PAVO food chain and got a response of "That's a new one". It's something that actually happened--but was in a HS fresh-soph game not college.
