This match is important for both teams. Pepperdine beat LMU 3-1 in Sept. LMU beat San Diego last week. LMU plays San Diego again next week. Pepperdine plays San Diego on Saturday and in November. If Pepperdine wins here and splits with San Diego, Pepperdine controls its own destiny. If LMU wins here (for the split), beats San Diego again and San Diego beats Pepperdine twice, LMU would win out. If LMU wins here (for the split), beats San Diego again and San Diego splits with Pepperdine, it would come down to sets won or number of points (assuming none of the 3 teams lose to other teams) in the two Pepperdine vs LMU matches bc both LMU and Pepperdine would have two losses and would have split with each other while SD would have three losses. There are many other possibilities but, bottom line, the matches between LMU, Pepperdine, and San Diego are critical. Check out trojansc 's bracketology for more info.

I think Pepperdine's sealed the tiebreaker even if LMU wins this match in 4. Their point differential would be too good, unless LMU completely throttles Pepperdine in set 3 and 4. If it goes 5, no matter what Pepp would win the tiebreaker over LMU.
Of course - if USD was involved and it was a 3-way tiebreaker, it could be different.
