Wucherer needs to be subbed out on serve receive. THE most obvious coaching decision in D1 volleyball in 2023. All the rest is a waste of breath before that happens. Wookie is in the front row for three rotations of serve receive. The only way for her to be “subbed out on serve receive is for her to not play. Presumably you don’t want that, but instead want someone else to take her place in serve receive while Wookie is in the front row. Since it won’t be Mel, and it won’t be Arica/Phoebe (whichever middle is also in thr front row), it has to be the Opposite position. Two thirds of the time, that would be Julia in the back, but you’d have one rotation where either Julia would play the front, or Lydia would have to handle serve receive. Is that better? I’m not sure. Julia practiced with the “passers” group at Coaches Circle camp, but I don’t know whether she is better than Wookie at passing. Presumably, Keegan and staff *do* know who is the better choice. Wookie playing across the back is a second, separate topic. There are more options for this… dunno which is the best option, though K and staff appear to think that having Wookie stay in except for the half rotation where she is serving is the best, or maybe least bad, choice. (Edit/add) Another option would be to play a 2-person serve receive. We sometimes did that when Paula Gentil was Libero (and we had the three Amigos of Paula, Rhino, and Marci/Malama). I don’t know that we could do it with Kylie and TayLa, which is what we’d have unless we subbed TayLa out in the back row. (Not sure we could do it with Kylie and Z/Sky/Elise either, for that matter.) A two person serve receive would be wild, I didn't think it would be feasible. You'd have to probably use Z and Kylie to do it, the outsides couldn't handle half of the court on their own. One of the brainstormed options was to have Z sub into the back row at RS for Grote and use Z in serve receive. Whether it would be effective is anybody's guess, but it would give you the ability to have Z and Kylie in serve receive. If you did something like that, you'd have Z and Kylie in serve receive for 3 of 6 rotations (4/5/6), and Z/Kylie/Taylor for 2 of 6 (5/6) rotations. I don't know how Grote's passing is, but you could also try dropping Grote back in R1 and having Wucherer stacked up front with Shaffmaster. That could go a long way to improving passing numbers, and with that, could even help out the hitters since passing would (presumably) be better, allowing for more options, preventing opponents from camping out at the outside hitter. And even wilder option (And not one I'm advocating for) would be to have the libero come in for the outside hitters. Of course that means your middles are passing and I don't think anybody wants to see that.

It’s funny how the Gophs won but this thread reads like they lost 😂
Sure it was sloppy and passing is an enigma per usual but the block was good and Landfair made some scrappy, energetic defensive plays that were nice to see. They also recovered from runs by OSU better than they have before (with the exception of set 2…) and went on to build up runs of their own in response. They did what they needed to do to get the win

OK, apparently I'm not privy to some things.
What makes you think that Z is ready to play?
Have you seen practices and know how the team works?
Or is this just your wish list?

She was marketed as the top libero in Europe when she was announced as signed with the Gophers. I literally don’t care about practice. You see wucherer in games and it is NOT good.

Umm, no Z was not marketed as that.
Correct me if I'm wrong but she was marketed as the second best libero in Turkey in her age range.
Impressive how some of you think you're much better than the coaching staff.

Not even Wheel of Fortune will let you take as many L's as clob has in this thread.

She could have been playing Cameroon’s U12 team in that highlight reel, and I can still gather that she is at least a viable option to try in a game. I watched while doing things this evening, but undeniably embarrassing passing performance. I was chuckling at the announcer’s constant questioning of why adjustments weren’t being made and then tossing in their own suggestions. It really doesn’t take a rocket scientist.

Needed win for the Gophers on the road! Good for them! Ohio State's record is a product of their brutal non conference, based on the reasonable assumption all their grads would not transfer, one to Minnesota! Not a bad team, I was happy when Wisconsin got by them twice!

After watching some incredible serve reception for almost the entire match in the PSU - NEB one has to be left with the question what are the good teams doing re. passing that the middle of the pack teams can not. There were a grand total of 2 aces in the 5 set match and one was a serve that was left to touch the end line. Late in the 5th set PSU had an overpass killed, and a poor pass that resulted in a free ball. In almost every instance the passers were positioned behind the ball and not swinging from a sidearm platform. I'll look forward to that match on youtube where i can run at at 150% and focus on passing technique. I've been enjoying learning about Joe Trinsey's Triangle smartervolley.substack.com/p/thetriangleand one thing is perfectly clear: a raft of reception errors and shanked passes is not only detrimental to your terminal serve stats, but also hampers your FBSO (First Ball Sideout Stats) btw, PSU's FBSO stats in the first two sets had to be just freakin' awesome. They were taking no prisoners I would assume that JFO made some adjustments after set one that were partly responsible for tOSU hitting near .600 in the second set. haven't seen the play by play but I would assume our block evaporated. 7 in set 1 and 12 for the match btw, re OPP sub: Grote had committed back to back HEs and, for whatever reason, Cook has her on a short leash for errors. Crowl has nowhere near Grote's attack speed and it wasn't until very late in the last set that she finally got a kill. 8-8 in set 2 and then?

I get it, passing sucks. But at this point in the season no matter how much you scream it into the universe he’s not going to change it up. Why? Don’t know. Is it frustrating? Yes. And none of us are in the gym to truly know what the deal is. But they pulled out the W despite passing like crap. I’ve lowered my expectations significantly for this year. If they can win the matches they should despite the obvious woes, I’m happy.

A number of Minnesota fans seem to think that ZP is Paula Gentil and Keegan Cook is keeping her on the bench because he wants to lose...even when they win 3-1 on the road.
It's November 4th, the team on the court is the one you get for 2023.
