The football game Saturday was also on SECN+. Last year's LHN announcers (Lowell Galindo & Fozzy Whitaker) called the game so I suspect they used a lot of the LHN crew from last year. I wonder if that made a number of crew type people unavailable? The Miami match was also on SECN+. I still had DirectTV at that time so I wasn't able to watch it due to their little spat with ESPN. Was that production just as bad as Friday? the miami matched seemed normal to me...this production was so bad...i've never seen anything like it before (s**tty camerawork, it was like someone new was handling the cameras & they did not understand the game of volleyball) That makes me feel a bit better. May have been a substitute crew for the Hawaii match because the regular crew was doing the football game on Saturday. At least I hope that is the case. |

I read somewhere else that it was a student run camera crew for the Hawaii match. Not sure if that's true or not but would make sense. Miami also had in-person commentators while Hawaii was in-studio. I'd think managing info & stats would be easier from a studio but with all the mistakes that doesn't seem to be the case. |

I decided to re-watch the Hawaii game on demand on ESPN+ to see what the complaints about the camera were and oh my goodness, that was painful to watch. For those who didn't watch in person or the replay, essentially the producer decided to only focus on about 50% of the court. Serve went long? You didn't see it. Apparently the producer has dictated that the camera should follow the ball and so there's a lot of "jerking" around.
Who do I write to complain about this? And they can't pull that lame excuse about "it's the size of Gregory that forces us to focus that closely". C'mon. LHN had no problem broadcasting it like the other ESPN+ channels. It's gotta be the producer/director. I guess they didn't keep the old LHN crew around when it folded.
Please email Chris Del Conte at ad@athletics.utexas.edu to share your feedback! Even though the zoom got adjusted mid-match, generally the production values were really poor. The frenetic "Point Texas" orange screen after big plays was dizzying and distracting. IMO if you aren't going to show a useful graphic, just stay focused on the court dammit. Given that viewers at home have to PAY to access SECN+ productions, we should be getting a better product that this |

Is this sarcasm or can I really expect that someone might be working on improvement? LOL I did email CDC during the match and then 5 mins later the camera zoomed out. IDK if that was coincidence or not but it did get addressed |

I could buy that it was a student crew since there's a good chance the regular crew was assigned to the football game. With one commentator Friday, I would think the producer and/or studio crew would need to help him out with info and stats. If they were, it certainly wasn't effective. The next SECN+ match in Austin is on 10/2 against South Carolina. Hopefully the production is much improved for that one. |
