Thursday cannot get here fast enough. 1st home match. we gotta bring it I’m ready for the girls to hopefully take out some frustration on Indiana. Although I do think Indiana will be able to score points with their crafty setter against our middles. However I don’t know that they’ll be able to replicate Minnesota’s defense and blocking, especially from their middles.

I'm not sure I've seen a team handle madi's backrow attack more effectively than Minnesota did tonight what scares me if wisconsin def soft blocked it a lot too. tonight was clearly another animal but still. we're going to need a stronger front row attack when she's back row. whether that's getting rutherford more sets or putting in whitney for jenna front row, there's gonna have to be some sort of change bc we know what wenaas is at this point. i'd vote let's get way more balls to rutherford first lol we also need to run madi on more behind bics and/or inside D balls (i wouldnt even mind the occasional true D ball) just to mix up the look if we are keeping wenaas front row. carlson tried it once but you could tell madi wasnt ready for it. running it straight up the middle every time is easy to scout. last season swindle set it behind all the time and we also occasionally ran that D ball play too (although we abandoned it)

^ I was super impressed with Minnesota's blocking, especially on Madi. While several swings I still think the ball could be higher, they got great touches on her. Part of that needs to be moving the bic around so she's not just coming straight at the block, which I imagine could be a wrinkle that we'll see later in the season
like hornhouse said, heavy is the head that wears the crown. teams are gonna be coming for us, and for Madi especially. we're not new to it.

i really like having 3 littles in the backcourt to stabilize things...i understand we may not have a 3rd little ready yet...i wonder if je will change things up

Okay, I wrote down some thoughts since I needed to wind down after the game.
*Not a fan of the double sub halfway through the 5th. It took Kaylei off the court, and I think we needed her in the passing lineup.
*The team looked confused with some of the changes. Middles never knew if they were serving or if Rella was coming in. Averi and Ella were switched on a whim. Also, the team was constantly asking the down ref who was serving in the 5th. Does that happen a lot? Maybe it's just something you don't see on TV but I noticed in person.
*The rotating setters reminded me of Wisconsin's 2 liberos. I don't think either setter was able to take control of the game because they were going in and out. Also, I HATE the Swindle blocking sub versus having her set along the front row.
*Emma Halter is amazing! I'm so happy I got to see her in person. I was so impressed with our defense most of the weekend.
*OMG Madi flies on the bic! There was one in set 1 today, and everyone around me gasped.
*I like Jenna's play so far. She's looking much more comfortable this year, and she was making some amazing defensive plays.
*That being said, I would like to see Whitney or Jordyn come in front row for Jenna to provide more offense or a different look. But I think the setting needs to get figured out before adding more wrinkles to the lineup.
I feel like this loss will be good in the long run. Not many teams can make Texas as uncomfortable as Minnesota did today, and this experience will help prepare them for the tough away games to start SEC play.

Y'all, the Gophers are staying in my hotel. I was on the rowing machine in the gym when Wuercher* came in, then I ran into Calissa Minatee by the elevator. *Actually it might have been Lauren Crowl. It was a really tall, strongly built blonde person and I didn't want to stare. It was definitely Minatee though, she had a name tag on her game bag and we chatted about how tiring 5 setters were. I did wish her luck today, before I remembered that we were playing her. Ah, well, if we lose you can blame me i blame you

Fun fact, after clearing TSA at Milwaukee airport, the area where ppl can rearrange themselves is signposted as a "recombobulation area". We need to recombobulate.

So now that I've slept on it, here are my thoughts on last night's match:
- Rumors of Lauenstein's redshirt are probably true. I can think of no other reason why JE would put in a recovering Devin in the 4th set instead, there was one longish rally and Devin was visibly breathing hard afterwards.
- JE needs to pick a setter and go with her or else run a 6-2 consistently. The short leash yanking of setters prevented the team from adjusting and getting any kind of rhythm in sets when we were down. Plus right now their setting styles are too dissimilar.
- the sets are too low, to all hitters. Madi can go OTT. Let her.
- need more tooling of blocks, high hands etc. Especially from the middles. Yes it's fun to dent the floor but a point's a point and getting blocked is not.
- service pressure wasn't good until set 4.
I'm ok with the loss, it takes some pressure off of being #1 and undefeated, now everyone can move on and focus.
It was a really great event. I hope we do this again, but NOT straight out of the gate. Maybe as the 2nd or 3rd week of the season

I agree on picking a setter and going with it, or running an offense that uses both, be it a 5-2 or 6-2.
Perhaps it’s a dumb question, but how good would Carlson be in serve-receive, passing, defense (say, if she wasn’t the primary setter, and we didn’t run a 2-setter offense, and wanted to find a way to keep both her and Swindle involved). At the very least couldn’t Carlson be a serving substite?
