I've seen full matches of both teams this season. Houston is a strong team with some big arms and a good libero.
UCSB will need the rotations with Zhao and Reavis in to at least sideout if they can't go on runs. In my opinion, the other pins in Ohwobete, McKnight and Farmer and primed and ready to battle.

Both teams have strengths and strong pins, so this could be a close one. Voters are leaning UCSB, very slightly it looks.

Peed ready for a big spotlight game and upset Im excited to see her go toe-to-toe with another good libero. She was much better than her Big West counterparts.

Hoping ucsb takes this. Huge fan of what the new coach has done. The Gauchos have done a great job this season. They had a strong non-conference and conference season and Matt deserves credit. But I'm not sure what he has done different than the previous coach. He's basically kept the same rotations and offensive scheme.

This is such an awful first round match up... for both teams , but for fans it's a total gem. I think both of these teams would be a second round shoe-in if they had gotten almost any other match-up. UCSB's injuries has made them unable to beat the top of the Big West, and I just don't think the top of that league compares to the top half of the B12 this year, but what UCSB does have is immense heart. I've loved watching them re-gel post injuries. Peed vs. Georgiades is chef's kiss. I will likely give this match preference over most others happening in the same time slot. I couldn't be more excited!

The Big West's top 4 teams (UCSB, Hawaii, Cal Poly and LBSU) are 2-0 vs the top 4 teams of the Big 12 (Texas, Kansas, BYU and Iowa State) with LBSU beating Texas and UCSB beating Iowa State . Selective stats aside, the top of the Big 12 is a formable group of teams for sure. It's interesting that the Big West's two entries both drew Big 12 opponents; UCSB vs Houston and Hawaii vs Iowa State. I agree, both of these matches will be hard fought.

UCSB's injuries has made them unable to beat the top of the Big West, I don't follow you. UCSB swept LB and UH in the regular season. Their lone conference loss happened with two of their starters out at UCI. They also had a couple 5 set wins vs. middling conference teams while those two were out. UCSB was knocked out in the BWT semi-finals by Long Beach in an exciting 5 setter.

UCSB's passing and execution in their BWT tournament loss to LB was not at the level it had been most of the season. Credit to LB serving which absolutely played a role. Houston is one of the most experienced teams in the country, main contributors are all Graduates or Seniors plus a couple of Juniors. The Gauchos are fairly experienced as well. If SB gets their execution back to where its been most of the year, I see them winning this one. My preview of the match on the Gaucho message board: www.tapatalk.com/groups/ucsbgauchos/viewtopic.php?p=152372#p152372
