While I agree with the injuries thing, we haven't had the depth the last few years to do any substitutions. The only viable sub is TdB. No one else on that team is in the position to be subbed in, be mad about not playing and want to transfer. Who would they be talking about?? As I mentioned, this came as a surprise to me too, and no, it’s not about playing time as you assume—it’s something less obvious, which makes it all the more baffling. But hey, I’ll just leave that hanging. Now, as for depth, if we don’t have the talent or viable subs, whose job is it to actually recruit and develop these players? Last time I checked, we’ve got a roster of 18, so surely there’s more than just TdB waiting in the wings, right? Or are we saying no one else is good enough to be subbed in? If that’s the case, maybe we should be asking why we even bother filling those other spots. I mean, seriously—if 18 players aren’t giving us options, what exactly is the plan here Like oldmann said: we haven’t any players on the bench except TdB who can play. Burnage, Dean & Bingham have been out all season. That leaves a DS or 2. As far as recruiting, thats on Krista.

The only reason I am writing this is to show my support for the current Illinois volleyball players who will face Maryland in several hours. This group of Illini athletes will be seeking their 5th straight conference win after topping Indiana in straight sets 4 days ago. I thought it was perhaps the most complete match I have seen Illinois play this season. I am still on an "Illini high" after watching the football team defeat Michigan in yesterday's Centennial Celebration of Memorial Stadium. I hope those Illini fans watching today's volleyball game will enjoy a continuance of that "high"!

Did I see Jordyn join the singing after the victory over Maryland?

Congrats Illini - two solid wins this week. Raina hit .348 with 5.16 kills per set this week. She will be a strong contender for B1G POW

Did I see Jordyn join the singing after the victory over Maryland? Yep, Jordyn, Beth Prince, and Michael Ryan all joined in Singing Hail to the Orange! And this was sweet- after singing, those three alumni stepped out so the team could do their huddle and cheer but the team basically encircled them to include them in the ritual. Fun to see our Illini vball alumni back home! And even recognized some future Illini in attendance!

Well we got the win but with our normal serve receive struggles. Really happy to see this team fighting for every point and with all players having their special role in these wins. Let’s keep this rolling and get some big wins.
Unfortunately I feel the need to comment on the discourse around our staff and players. I think for someone to make a comment about a “top recruits parent” not choosing Illinois because of development is ludicrous. This staff has helped churn out an Olympic level setter, taken lower middle blockers and made them impact players in the big ten, and given the players a choice as to where they want to take their volleyball careers direction. For someone to be posting hearsay because of a conversation with an unknown players parents seems wild. The commentary of this staff not giving players chances just doesn’t make sense with the history or current players voices. We can all agree that there are weaknesses in our program, but every other program has the same problem. I think it’s safe to say that a big ten coach has more knowledge on who should be playing for his team when he sees them everyday in practice. Some players may be used more for a practice player role or for a leadership on the bench, not everyone is expected to play especially in the big ten. With our team starting to show strength this season and looking better every game, I think it’s important that as fans we don’t start rumors for the Illini future to see and get a bad taste for our Illini faithful.

I'd consider that a bit of an off game for the Illini, yet still managed a 3-0 sweep. 13-5!

A win is a win.
Saw Barnes on my way out. She was in the stands.

Couldn't agree more on your second paragraph, ill4life. Well said.

Just to place things in their proper context, please note that №3 Penn State beat Maryland, at Penn State, 3-1: 22-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-16.
Your perceptions may vary according to the depth of your recollection of reality.

Way to stick with it and gut out another different type of win, Illinois! Cool to see the no-quit mettle they're developing. As ill4life pointed out, each Illini is contributing in their own way and playing at a high level, all deserving of props!
For the Maryland match, I wanted to shout out Lily on a sequence of plays that helped turn the tide at a critical juncture of Set 1:
She came in to serve while we were down 17-20; Raina x Ashlyn get a block after long rally, 18-20; she then aces Maryland to narrow it to 19-20 and force a T.O.; then assists Raina OOS to tie it at 20-20; then her serve forces Maryland to overpass, eventually send us a downball, and Raina kills it to 21-20 ILL; Maryland then finally sides out to tie it up at 21.
A clutch service run late in Set 1 to get us back in the set, giving us some momentum and life after a slow start to the match. If we hadn't gone on that run there, Maryland maybe takes Set 1 and changes the whole complexion of the match. Well done, LB!
And shouts out to Christy on continued great floor D. Setting the tone back there and elevating the team defense play. ¡Bien hecho, CMM!

Also for their particularly consistent, elevated play this week I nominated Raina, Brooke, Laynie, and Ashlyn for VT weekly Big Ten players of the week recognition : ). Here's that post: Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week nomination: Raina Terry - OH - Illinois .348 Hitting %, 5.2 Kills/set (Two 3-0 home sweeps over Indiana and Maryland)
Big Ten Setter of the Week nomination:
Brooke Mosher - Setter - Illinois
.318 Team Hitting %, 9.7 Assists/set, 1 Ace/set
*Brooke sets ~5/6 rotations, hits opposite ~1/6 rotations. If she set for the full six rotations this week, she'd be projected to have gotten ~11.6 Assists prorated for full six rotations setting. That projection is slightly inflated, though because sometimes our substitute setter (Raegen Reilly) gets subbed back out in serve-receive if Illinois doesn't side out right away, meaning she only sets for a ~half rotation in those instances. Brooke's attack numbers are omitted from the team hitting %.
Big Ten Freshmen of the Week nominations: Laynie Smith - Opposite - Illinois
.303 Hitting %, 2.3 Kills/set, 1.5 Blocks/set
AND
Ashlyn Philpot - MB - Illinois
.400 Hitting %, 2.2 Kills/set, 1.2 Blocks/set
