In other news, Mizzou beats Texas which will help our RPI. Also cool to see Vernon go off against them - not sure how “true” it was about her coming to or considering being an Illini, would have been a great addition on our squad. The win against TX and them being tied for 1st in the SEC is MASSIVE for the orange and blue!

Yeah, a new strategic wrinkle is that Taylor subs in sometimes for Cari in a rotation that Cari and Laynie are in the front row. Laynie plays middle and Taylor plays opposite. I suspect that’s what people were posting about.

fightingillini.com/news/2024/11/1/volleyball-raina-terry-breaks-career-kills-record-in-triumph-at-northwestern.aspxNow that Raina has broken Jocelyn Birks Illinois' kills mark set in years 2012-2015, it would be interesting to see what Jocelyn has done since she graduated from Illinois. (I think it would be great to have a "Whatever Happened to?"...posting for Illini volleyball players). I remember her as the frequently unstoppable Illini go-to hitter. I am sure opposing teams were able to occasionally block her sharp angle shots, but not very often. Hambly was the Illinois coach during Jocelyn's years at Illinois, and I recall a few comments that Hambly had made about Jocelyn. I believe I am correct when Hambly was once quoted as admitting that he really was not instrumental in Jocelyn's development as a special OH. He gave Jocelyn all the credit! I watched both Jocelyn and Illinois' future setter, Alexis Viliunas, play together at the Illinois High School volleyball championships. They were a great combination at Lyons Twp High School, and signed together to go to the U of I where they continued to be a great combo. I also can recall Hambly encouraging JB to play pro volleyball after graduating from Illinois...while Jocelyn had her heart set on being a primary school teacher. I believe Jocelyn eventually took Hambly's advice.

Not complaining because it’s better than expected coming into the year, but I can’t recall a team in any sport that is pretty clearly 25th-35th best in the country and seemingly has no problem beating the teams below that while also being so uncompetitive against the teams better than that. I don’t know whether to be impressed that we routinely take care of business or frustrated that we don’t seem capable of springing an upset.

Mentioned this in the game thread, I would like to see us try Laynie in the middle and Taylor at opposite, just to see how it works.

Brooke Mosher news: Per Tamas on the pregame radio show, she's struggling physically between all the things she's doing -- setting, hitting, jump-serving, etc. Her body is just overworked from all the jumping. So they're trying to lighten her load.
Hence, the 6-2 we saw today. And since they're managing her accumulated wear and tear, I'd guess we'll see that for the rest of the year. No jump serve, no hitting, no blocking, at least most of the time. Bigger roles for Taylor and Raegen.
We'll see how well this approach works this season once we get more accustomed to running it -- and once other teams get more accustomed to seeing it. In any case, we'll get a head start on seeing what TdB might contribute next year. And she'll get a chance to get her feet wet in the BT.
Great sell-out crowd today. I didn't get to leave for the match much before it started, and couldn't find parking anywhere close. Our team looked fired-up to play when I got there partway through the first set. The team and the crowd fed off each other.
On the way out, I ran into Sarah Franklin's parents (who were there with some friends, all wearing her jersey, so easily ID'd). Friendly folk! I congratulated them on her career and told them I hoped to see her in the Olympics, with Jordyn Poulter feeding her and Smrek: "We'll all be friends then."

Sad to see us lose that set. We should have one that one and gained some confidence. Second time we lose a close one and seem to give up after.

With everything Brooke does on the court she deserves a breather! The 6-2 worked alright. No doubt they'll iron out the kinks and work on connections. They had Lily sub in for Averie in the back row for at least a portion of the 6-2. I'd think that would have us close to running out of subs late in tight sets.
Good to have a little bit of a break with no midweek game this week. Rest up for Friday and the Trojans.
Also, I've heard that Smrek will likely play for Team Canada. I don't know if she has dual citizenship.

The atmosphere at Huff was electric today, and the energy was contagious—especially in the second set when we were right on the brink. Unfortunately, we lost our rhythm in the third set, and starting with that rotation really set us back. That rotation killed us where we struggled to side out and just couldn’t recover. The substitution with Lily for Avery in the back row was a smart adjustment, given the recent trends, but CMM has looked fatigued over the last few matches, which may be affecting our stability. I am not surprised to hear about Brook with the many hats she has to wear. Hopefully the rest of the team can step up and relieve her of a high load right now. Raina was Raina again today, can I say it again, what will we do without her next year?! Not that I don’t have faith in our team but that is going to be big shoes to fill and as the season progresses the reality of her departure hits more and more. It was nice to see TdB and Regan on the court together—I’m excited to see how they build that connection in games and where it can go. Good to have more height in the front and see what Miss TdB can do. Encouraging to see ALL the freshmen stepping up, and Philpot coming in to serve last few games is unexpected but interesting choice. As we approach the latter part of the season, I hope we can sustain enough energy and momentum to keep pushing forward. I always feel like this time of year is where we lose some focus and grit. There were some standout moments, especially in that second set—it showed real potential. I would really like to see us get into the tournament both for this team but also for Raina in her last dance.
