Illinois 7-5 BIG; 15-7 current. IMHO...4 more Illini wins earn a NCAA Div I tournament invite.
The remaining Illini matches with updated opponent RPIs. The Illini RPI is 28 (NCAA FIGSTATS).
21---USC at Huff 71---Ohio State at Huff; a must win 5----Penn State 22---Purdue 209--Rutgers at Huff; a must win 63---UCLA at Huff; a must win 30---Minnesota at Huff 65---Indiana; please don't make this a must win at Hoosier Senior Night.

On the way out, I ran into Sarah Franklin's parents (who were there with some friends, all wearing her jersey, so easily ID'd). Friendly folk! I congratulated them on her career and told them I hoped to see her in the Olympics, with Jordyn Poulter feeding her and Smrek: "We'll all be friends then." I hope Poulter isn't feeding Smrek, since she's Canadian π¨π¦

Brooke Mosher news: Per Tamas on the pregame radio show, she's struggling physically between all the things she's doing -- setting, hitting, jump-serving, etc. Her body is just overworked from all the jumping. So they're trying to lighten her load. Hence, the 6-2 we saw today. And since they're managing her accumulated wear and tear, I'd guess we'll see that for the rest of the year. No jump serve, no hitting, no blocking, at least most of the time. Bigger roles for Taylor and Raegen. We'll see how well this approach works this season once we get more accustomed to running it -- and once other teams get more accustomed to seeing it. In any case, we'll get a head start on seeing what TdB might contribute next year. And she'll get a chance to get her feet wet in the BT. Great sell-out crowd today. I didn't get to leave for the match much before it started, and couldn't find parking anywhere close. Our team looked fired-up to play when I got there partway through the first set. The team and the crowd fed off each other. On the way out, I ran into Sarah Franklin's parents (who were there with some friends, all wearing her jersey, so easily ID'd). Friendly folk! I congratulated them on her career and told them I hoped to see her in the Olympics, with Jordyn Poulter feeding her and Smrek: "We'll all be friends then." It tracks with some info from last year. She is looking a little tired from chasing balls all the time and all the jumping. Give her a rest now so she is fresh for the tourney.

(Thankfully, the Franklins just smiled and indulged me.)

Call me a hater but I'm not feeling too great about what I saw from the Illini today. The second set collapse followed up by an uncompetitive third set has been an unfortunate theme of our season when facing the better teams. As someone mentioned, our inability to at least be competitive against the upper tier teams we face as a 25-35 ranked team is rather astonishing. I'm sure we all saw the game today so I won't go too into depth, but I will say it pains me to watch our back row in games like today. Completely out of position at times, not communicating and calling balls/seams, letting balls drop so far within the baseline it isn't even close, inability to serve receive, and a tendency by our setters to leave their bases before actually seeing where the opposition is hitting to. I think we all know who is responsible for coaching up our backrow....even he looked confused as to what we were doing out there.
Brooke has been banged up - I suppose this was the game to break out the 6-2. Wouldn't be surprised to see it continue on longer, but also wouldn't be surprised to see us return to what we have been doing either because Brooke returns to full health or because desperate times calls for desperate measures.
At this point, I just want us to make the tourney...for Raina. I think 3 wins would put us on the bubble, 4 gets us in. Rutgers is a must win. Next weekend is a big one - we MUST win at least 1, 2 would be a bonus. UCLA is much better than their record indicates, but I think we will be competitive with it at Huff. & as someone mentioned, I really don't want to leave our chances up to the senior night match at Indiana. I'd also like to think we could maybe steal one at Minnesota or Purdue. Plenty of opportunities on the board. Tamas needs to get things straightened up fast and we need the crowd to show up at Huff and push our girls to a couple of home wins. We can do this. I-L-L

On some levels it is remarkable we have done as well as we have done over the past 4 or 5 years given how bad our backrow play has been. I respect Tamasβ loyalty to his coaches, but enough is enough.

RPI at #29 this week, down from #25. Missouri at #22, up from (as I recall) #31.
Next opponent USC at #17. Opportunity knocks.

As far as the tourney goes, we hold our fate in our own hands. Rutgers is going to be an RPI killer. So we have to win the 4 we should win and hope we can pull an upset on USC/Minn/Purdue to guarantee a berth.
Man do I wish we had that win against Mizzou! Could have been a difference maker for for us.
