Raina got a nice shoutout from Lee and Emily on their weekly podcast Zoom "900 Square Feet", starting at about the 3:15 mark. Much deserved for Raina to be getting some wider recognition:
...and speaking of recognition, Raina is VT's co-Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week! Well done, RT!

While looking for the AVCA top 25 rankings, I stumbled upon the AVCA/MaxPreps HS players of the week and saw that Alyssa Aguayo was listed! Nice job, Alyssa!

Dean/Bingham haven’t been suited up since August. It’s November. I don't think it’s concussions. I seem to remember Bingham havjng something on her back. Maybe time for some medical retirements and free up scholies to use on the portal. There has to be some decent bodies out there. Everyone else uses the portal to restock, why not us? We got lucky with CMM & Averie. We can do it again. Don’t you find in interesting that players who were not in our program prior to last year are healthy and aside from Raina the rest were injured including career ending injury for Caroline? I remember even Raina was injured last year. That makes every player from illinois susceptible? Yes, we can use the portal to get healthy players ..but doesn't that sound a just a little irrational? Exactly the point. The only really healthy individuals are people new to the program. So what is going on that we constantly have a multitude of injuries. None of the people currently out had any previous injuries (except Tdb). Didn't Ashlyn not play for a portion of last spring due to an injury but look at her this year? Also, to your earlier post, Tamas hasn't subbed anyone out because we DON'T have any offensive players to sub in. Tdb was the lone person but now she is out. We need bodies.

Well I guess so, but then doesn't that defeat the whole idea of building a team and recruiting? The assumption is that they were injured coming into Illinois which I do not think is the case for most of our players. From my understanding players have to go through a vetting process and medical review prior to being offered a position like other clearances. Perhaps the load is too much for players during the year or something but it is worth looking into. Outcomes show patterns that is all I think any of us are saying. No one wants to see good players sidelined or hurt for playing volleyball and if there is something we can do better as a program to maintain health of our team then I think it makes sense to look into it and I hope they do. The top teams in the country all use the portal extensively. Wisco, Pitt, PSU, Louisville, Neb, Texas. SMU anyone?? This whole narrative of recruiting and building a team is a thing of the past. Yup, if you aren't using the rules to your advantage, you are starting way behind everyone else.

In 2022 at the final four Texas started 4 transfers, USD 3, Pitt 4. Only Louisville did not start any transfers. I’m too lazy at the moment to check 2023, but I suspect similar roster construction.
The ship of competing at a high level without hitting the transfer portal in a significant manner has sailed.

Re: The transfer discussion....
Do any of you have an idea whether (and how much) the top volleyball programs offer significant NIL? Here at the UI, all the NIL money is reserved for the Big Two sports: Anything the non-revenue teams can offer, they have to scrounge up on their own. (Or so I'm told by someone in a reasonably good position to know.) Is it different at other schools -- perhaps tapping into the same boosters who've funded these up-to-date volleyball facilities? It's not hard to imagine Nebraska having some $$$$ for players.
I'd imagine the main draw for transfers at those programs is the chance to compete for national titles and get access to coaches who can set them on a path to Olympic and/or professional opportunities. Just wondering if money has become enough of a consideration to sway anyone.

Big thank you to Sarah and Kayla for all you've done for the orange and blue. Good luck in your future endeavors! Ah, so it's been officially announced! Then now it can be told: When I spoke a while back about one player who is eligible to return in 2025 but wouldn't, I was referring to Sarah Bingham. She finished up her academic work early, and she knew before the season that this would be her last. (It wasn't about dissatisfaction with her role. In fact, she praised the coaching staff and said they were the reason she was here. This also was before her back injury, I think.) It was a pleasure talking to her and Raina for a while. The young women on our team generally make a good impression when you meet them, and this was no exception. Here are Sarah's and Kayla's farewell video packages: http://instagram.com/p/DCkoV5wvHei http://instagram.com/p/DCnM-Y6vLI4 Since Kayla's not returning, I suspect her warm-ups lately mean that she'll get into a match briefly in one of our home matches.

Since Kayla's not returning, I suspect her warm-ups lately mean that she'll get into a match briefly in one of our home matches. I’ve kinda been thinking she might try to keep her medical redshirt intact so she could play a full season next year. With Sarah leaving early, Kayla could fill an important role as a veteran middle on our team next year. Or maybe she’d look to transfer somewhere.
