I have her for fantasy because her stats are bonkers (outside of her assists). I get SS is good. I have zero doubt about it. but a healthy Shaffmaster can be a game changer. she’s so physical at the net, great serve, and great defense. I feel like wasting a year of SS’ eligibility when you have Shaffmaster is stupid unless she’s clearly outplaying her, which sorry, I have a really difficult time seeing. We're all in agreement here that Shaffmaster is an elite all around volleyball player. The problems are: 1. We've had a lot of below average serve receive during her career. Since she's so tall and often dragging around a bum knee, she has a hard time chasing down these balls to get a decent set. 2. Even when the passing is good, she hasn't had a connection with her middles in her 4 years so far at Minnesota. She had a bit of success with Booth and Gros running the slide a couple of years ago, when that was clicking, the team looked a lot better offensively. Hopefully she can develop that same connection with Minatee this year. If you're a coach, do you save SS on the bench for an entire year when situations 1 and 2 arise? This is definitely Shaffmaster's team, I just think saving a player in the transfer portal era is folly. Luckily, as a local player and a legacy, SS is more likely to stick around, but I'd hate to start saving players so they can transfer to Nebraska and Texas for year 5. You lost me at the end there. I think we already talked about this in the past. Why would she transfer when she knows that she will have the next 4 years to start while having this year to redshirt to train and get stronger? I just don't get that logic. I can tell you that Keegan should already have that conversation with Stella about RS and he won't do it dirty like the other Cook (hence his player transferred) lol.

Why would any starter transfer? The fact is that it happens. If any player can help you win more games this season then they should play this season. That would be mentality as a coach in this era.

I just don’t know if it’s worth subbing in SS if she’s willing to redshirt. I don’t think she pushes y’all to any higher ceiling than Shaffmaster does this season (where I do think she could push to a higher ceiling in future seasons). I can’t imagine she transfers bc of a redshirt unless she asks not to when she’d be shoe in starter for the next four seasons

To your point, Shaffmaster went to an Elite 8 and has kept this team (outside of last year) consistently ranked in the top 10. She is one of the best (I could argue the best) defensive setters in the B1G. If Stella was on the roster last year, I could have maybe seen Keegan make the move to her with Shaffmaster’s injury, but it would be silly to bench a healthy Shaffmaster.

I should clarify that I'm fully Team Shaffmaster. There's no equation where I would bench even an average 4-year starter for a true freshman starter at setter.
The question is, in those moments when things aren't going Shaffmaster's way, do you ride it out even if it costs you wins? Maybe we won't have those scenarios as often this year. If you're coach and you think playing SS in spot scenarios is the difference between an Elite 8/Final Four/B1G contender season or a R32/S16 season/6th place season? Do you leave the redshirt on?

I’m a tad out of the loop libero wise for y’all. does Zeynep get the nod? I think Thibault might be better than her, especially passing

I think Thibault might be better than her, especially passing I would think Thibault would start unless Zeynep has made incredible gains in serve receive. No matter what serve receive has to be better than last year... I think... I hope... I pray...

Maybe it's her goal to get out in four years, who knows. Based on the (asterisk) spring/international matches, I'd bet they are at least hoping to redshirt her this year but may deploy in a pinch, but how helpful are spring matches really. Also, "Minatee is a bit Booth-like" got me double taking lmao

Keegan said (while chatting with my sister and me) that they would likely make *decisions* (not to say they aren’t thinking about it already, of course) on who will be starting after the MN-vs-ISU scrimmage this Saturday.
Am I right in my assumption that a scrimmage - even if it’s against another school - doesn’t count in terms of “playing” for redshirting, or as a percentage for medical redshirts?

Scrimmage would not count for eligibility. Stella should be able to play and still redshirt (if she does)

I’m pro-Minnesota unless y’all bench Shaff😁 If she needs to be benched, she will be.
We don't owe her anything

I’m team Shaffmaster for this season. If you're a fan of the team, then you'll support whomever the best players are who should be on the court.
