I have her for fantasy because her stats are bonkers (outside of her assists). I get SS is good. I have zero doubt about it. but a healthy Shaffmaster can be a game changer. she’s so physical at the net, great serve, and great defense. I feel like wasting a year of SS’ eligibility when you have Shaffmaster is stupid unless she’s clearly outplaying her, which sorry, I have a really difficult time seeing. We're all in agreement here that Shaffmaster is an elite all around volleyball player. The problems are: 1. We've had a lot of below average serve receive during her career. Since she's so tall and often dragging around a bum knee, she has a hard time chasing down these balls to get a decent set. 2. Even when the passing is good, she hasn't had a connection with her middles in her 4 years so far at Minnesota. She had a bit of success with Booth and Gros running the slide a couple of years ago, when that was clicking, the team looked a lot better offensively. Hopefully she can develop that same connection with Minatee this year. If you're a coach, do you save SS on the bench for an entire year when situations 1 and 2 arise? This is definitely Shaffmaster's team, I just think saving a player in the transfer portal era is folly. Luckily, as a local player and a legacy, SS is more likely to stick around, but I'd hate to start saving players so they can transfer to Nebraska and Texas for year 5. Solid post

I think we already talked about this in the past. Why would she transfer when she knows that she will have the next 4 years to start while having this year to redshirt to train and get stronger? I just don't get that logic. How strong does she need to be? She is already plenty enough strong to be the leader of the team, if it came to that. This isn't football. She doesn't need to squat 400.

There's no equation where I would bench even an average 4-year starter for a true freshman starter at setter. I can think of an equation. It's the one where she plays like she played last year.

Obviously other aspects of the game are super important but bettering the ball (setting) should be top priority for a setter.

How come you left out “setting” in your list of her best skills lol bc she’s not an elite setter?? the same way Swindle wasn’t an elite *setter* last season either but she did the other things incredibly. why should swenson’s setting be the only factor lol. it’s not like y’all have the pieces to have some dynamic offense this season anyways. y’all need Melanie to score points between her offense, incredible blocking, and good serving. ESPECIALLY when Grote is back row

I’m pro-Minnesota unless y’all bench Shaff😁 Oh no… you’re really going to get one poster fired up 😂 I’m team Shaffmaster for this season. I think I may be in the minority on this forum though. real ones are #teamShaffmaster for this season

Not that Tik Tok is the eye to the future but Zeynep posted a clip of an in-practice scrimmage and this was the lineup for her side:
S: SS Opp: Crowl Middle: Phoebe Lib: Zeynep OH: Wuch OH: Grote
An interesting lineup to say the least... Not 100% sold on the Grote to outside allegations but definitely makes you think. It certainly can't be solely chalked up to a positional depth deficit (we have 4 OHs without her...) but unless Crowl had the transformation of a lifetime or Julia Hanson is secretly out for the season, whyyyyyy are we moving Grote to outiside??? Hoping this was simply an experiment during practice

I think most teams don’t always play with A team vs B team during practice scrimmages/6v6. I saw that TikTok lineup too and didn’t think much of it.
Your backup opposite (Lauren) needs reps with your starting setter (Mel). Your liberos need reps against your highest flier in the gym (Julia). Etc etc. There have been all kinds of lineups in social media clips.
I like that Grote gets passing reps too. I wonder if we’ll ever see her help out with passing this season. Keegan has coached an opposite relatively recently who had some passing responsibilities (Drechsel). I’m not predicting it will or should happen regularly, but if an outside gets put in the shank tank and you don’t want to/can’t put in a sub, putting an opposite in the reception formation can at least give the server a different look and take some pressure off your outside.
