Wow, what a resilient win today! Thru 2 sets, I saw very little sign of life, and was resolved that we were going to take the loss. OSU is a hard team to figure out - I was worried about this match, based upon recent history with them as well as their near upsets of PSU and was it Purdue? Side note - why is it so hard to get announcers who know the game? Arguably, you're not going to have many casual viewers on B1G+, and we were subjected to announcers who don't really know the game or terminology. They lauded Keegan for his defensive adjustment of rotating Phoebe in to the front row. I watched the rest of the match on mute. It's always comical the things these announcers say, when they have no knowledge of basic volleyball concepts like rotations, serving subs, etc.

I know someone who has done commentary ranging from BTN+ to ESPN. For the former, it may just be more of a gig thing (you free Saturday and wanna make a few bucks?) and you don’t always get people who know the programs or did research beforehand. If it’s on so,solace like ESPN they’ll likely either do so,e homework before or the crew makes sure the play by play has the info they need

I watched on mute too and I frequently have to remind myself on these B1G+ broadcasts that they're students and they're still learning... the two had a good broadcasting cadence but that was about it. The playbook comments were especially funny 😂 My biggest gripe though is with the camera work... it's so hard to watch most of the time. Shakey camera and zoomed in so far that you can't see the ball. How can you watch any sport if half the time the play is happening outside of the camera view??? If this was football or basketball and the camera didn't have the ball in focus at all times, people would riot.

We used to watch football on crappy 480i TV sets (or was analog TV 360i?) using cameras that were fix-point located in the upper decks. Heck, we used to *record* that crappy video onto even crappier VHS tapes, and then watch it at 240i resolution! (Won’t even get into watching it on black&white sets, in the middle of a snowstorm.) “Kids these days!”

Boy, do the knives come out when MN is underperforming A match is 5 sets. It certainly didn't look good after 2 sets. JT did us a favor and stopped watching Serve and PASS is the name of the game and the script flipped after set 2. For me, Grote's big swing OOS kill midcourt on a long rally in ro1 when clinging to a 21-19 foot lead in the 3rd set was the most consequential point of the match. They'd let a 5 pt lead (17-12) evaporate. The tide they'd been swimming against turned. I think the 4th set turned on this sequence: Shaff SE to make it 10-10
A FBSO in ro1 for Phoebe Acevedo 3 pt. service run to go from 11-10 to 14-10. Phoebe on a gap set Hanson on a line drive, OSU. to Acevedo ace
OSU scored 3 points on their serve, all of them early. After their lead at 4-1 they never score a point the rest of the set when they were serving. Note that 82% sideout% we had.
MN's 5 set experience surely helped. Hanson ran off 5 points on her serve to help MN go from 4-6 to 9-6.
Someone on the game thread employed the cliche that OSU snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. That demeans every player on the floor and the coaches on the bench. It was truly unfortunate that Emmi Sellman missed the nonconference season, but she is probably more dynamic than either Eva Hudson or Chloe Chicoine (Purdue) and OSU is going to win some matches that the Massey or Pablo simulations have pegged as losses. She & Mia Tuman will have 2 1/2 more years together (shudder!!) I think I've used the analogy before. The team is traversing an ice field on a glacier and the back end of the line falls into a crevice that opens. You drive your ice axes into the surface and claw your way up and out of danger. Most of them are, it's a program with the schools to give their communication/media students real world experience with broadcasting. Details: btn.com/about/student-u/

I have enjoyed when Meredith Nelson-Uram has been paired with a student doing play-by-play for Minnesota's B1G+ matches. The student gets experience but there's someone there to deftly right the ship when D balls start getting called slides (she's done that lol). She's really great on the mic for someone who studied business and works at General Mills. So happy she's gotten some BTN matches now too!

Nellie is a *great* color / analysis person, and good at gently correcting the less knowledgeable.

Kind of annoyed with posters saying fans shouldn’t be so quick to judge the play of the gophers after one or two sets. This team is soooo much better than sets 1 and 2 today and it should never have gone to 5. Did they turn things around? Yes, absolutely. But those first two sets were hard to watch as a fan. I’m still having a really hard time with the justification of keeping Wucherer in the backrow. She is clearly battling an injury and it has never been her strong suit. Acevedo has done the job just fine. Good? No. But better? Yes. Some head-scratching coaching decisions but they pulled out the win. Onward.

The knives were out with good reason, as the Gophers seemed to be sleepwalking through the first two sets. We like to vent when they are not playing up to their capabilities. I feel like their 5 point run near the end of set 2, gave them a little hope that they were able to carry into set 3. I said too little too late at the time, since they were down 21-12 when it began. Yes, that OOS kill by Grote was a great play. Her versatility as an ex-middle paid off there, I think. Snellman more dynamic than Hudson and Chicoine is a TAKE. Going to have to disagree on that one. At the end of the day it was good to see Wucherer get back to double digit kills for the first time since the Diet Coke Classic. Their floor defense improved over the last 3 sets as well, and Hanson was clutch from the line in set 5 (though I was mystified that she wasn't in the front row to start and really didn't get many swings in set 5).

Prior to today, none of the Gophers' 10 opponents with a Pablo ranking over 30 had taken even one set from the Gophers or, for that matter, even reached 23. Pretty good streak.
