www.instagram.com/reel/DCJ8Nz8ufwm/?igsh=NDU4b2FrdTJ3bWJ1Really nice interview from Mel. I know leg braces like that mean no bueno but didn't know it was that bad. Really interesting to hear how shes learning to be more of a leader this year. I was under the impression it was always her post-Samedy. Sounds like shes growing into the role and feels more comfortable in it. Happy for her.

So I wonder what our goal is for this program going forward. Like is the administration pleased with a Top 25/30ish program and if that's all we achieve it will be good enough? What are their expectations for Cook?
I know as fans we are expecting and wanting a top 10 team every year, or close to it. Will our current or future recruits be able to take us where we want to be? Can our coach be a consistent top 10 coach? Just wondering about expectations and if we need to adjust as fans or what.

Coyle seems to give people 5 years and if they aren’t meeting expectations, they get axed. I’d assume if we’re not in final four/elite 8 by 2027, Cook will be forced to resign/fired.

So sort of like the Democrats, we should be looking toward 2028.

The ups and downs have me ready to just see what they can do on the road first weekend of the tournament with no pressure. Say we do the unthinkable and win @ Nebraska and @ Wisconsin and earn a 3- or 4-seed (9-16 overall). Hosting and being upset by a 5- or 6-seed just sounds painful af and something we'd be fully capable of. We are so easy to scout. Teams would love to come play freely and "upset" us at the Pav. At this point I'd rather be a 5- or 6-seed and an underdog the first weekend. Hopefully not 7 or 8.
I wonder if they really felt the pressure to perform for a top 16 overall seed this weekend and crumbled particularly in service reception but also serving errors against Washington. Losing to Washington and Oregon isn't bad. It's HOW it happened that was just really not reassuring to see in November. Worst weekend at the Pav that I can remember in a while.

Well if they cannot handle the pressure of these situations, how can they handle the pressure of the tournament?

Lol I’m bummed enough to say I don’t think I want to see them lose at home in the tournament but not bummed enough to say I don’t want them to play at all in December. I’m not totally hopeless. Discouraged

The flip side of home court pressure is a "not-in-our-house" mindset. I don't want to say the Gophers don't have that attitude, but I don't think I've heard it expressed as much lately.

I typically hate cliches
But
“it is what it is” is what it is
Our weaknesses in reception, richly identified in the Purdue match, are being exploited Our stated goal of 20+% middle attacks is no longer an opponent concern Oregons setter was continuously giving sweet sets for #13 to destroy. Keegan wanted more aggressive serving this year We were scoring more efficiently, near 47%, but Acevedo is now the only regular above 50%
In the game thread I complained that Z isn’t taking spin off her serve. A float that doesn’t knuckle is a lollipop. Wookie was getting aced by Hunt with a hard driven knuckles. Finally she did when it was too late. Hanson had bad serving vs Wa but she wasn’t going long today, can I take credit LOL cuz her contact point was a bit behind the line? Shaff can up her pressure too Grote is great but too often she interrupts a run with a fault
If either the Illini or Mich harbor tourney hopes we are going to have to be better to go 4-2

These past several years of the McCutcheon/Cook tenure have not brought the development that we possibly spoiled fans have expected. Look at the touted recruits over this time. Rubright, Landfair, Wenaas, Shaff, Wolf, Glenn, Wucherer, Hanson, Minatee. Have any of them exceeded expectations? No (although Hanson is trending that way). Have any met expectations? I think not (other than Hanson & Minatee...and maybe Shaff because I like her spirit, leadership, guts, and defense). Why? What are the coaches doing to foster improvement? I think that we are pretty much thru the transition period, so no more excuses please. Next year will be yet another crucial period for this program. Like other Gopher fans, I hope that somehow the switch is flipped.

If that didn't have an impact on his decision to retire, then why would he have mentioned it? I can't say for sure, but I feel this played a role in a recent transfer out and another. It will be interesting to see who stays or transfers this December or perhaps after the next Spring Season. Also, if there is any movement in our Assistant Coaches. Now, wouldn't that become a "topic of conversation" should that happen.

Like other Gopher fans, I hope that somehow the switch is flipped. imo, to call Hanson trending is kind of an insult. She's hitting at a higher % than Landfair in her POY. How could you leave off Carter Booth or Lauren Barnes? Wenaas had no spot as an OH with Wookie & Landfair in 2023. I pay no attention to the TX thread, but I'm sure there are grumbles about her spotty terminality. Could anyone fill Eggleston's sneakers? Landfair is doing better as a 3 rotation player with Neb. Her move was good for all concerned Shaffmaster has many gifts, but soft hands are not one of them. Wookie is a mystery (imo her health is a factor). Very particular re. the kind of set she is confident driving. She & Shaff do not seem to have a synergistic relationship for the length of time they've shared on the court. I hope she stays and has a great senior year with Stella. Her passing (until this week) took a positive leap this year and her hitting % better after her return. I think she is still nowhere near 100% physically Barnes chose to xfr when it became clear that C C McGraw was MN's chosen libero. She flourished at WI. Booth chose not to stay when Hugh announced his departure. She is a fixture MB for WI. I think Minatee would be flourishing with more consistent sets, but maybe there are other reasons for underperformance lately and I believe she will make a jump next year. Glenn was undersized from the get go. It takes a Orzol-like tenacity to be a successful undersized OH. I love her jump topspin serve but we only really saw it in non conference play You didn't mention Crowl, a loyal Minnesota recruit, who we are still waiting to see the arm speed that we eventually saw with Katie Harms. She sat out her freshman year (Samedy's senior year), was behind Wenaas in 2022 and Grote the past two years. You're hard to please. How many MLB draftees make it to the bigs in the first two years? Coaches now have the opportunity to use the portal to let other coaches do the early heavy lifting. NIL makes it even tougher to retain high quality developing athletes.

Russ Rose was the one who most famously complained about that...when he retired from Penn State.
