There's lot's of former players out there that have loads of volleyball IQ but that doesn't mean they can coach. This comment is going to stir up some shaite on here with some of the homers but I'm still going to voice my opinion anyway: if Robyn doesn't get us back into the national rankings in the next couple of years we should look for another head coach. We've only been ranked once in the last 7 years and the excuse that some on here were making after Robyn was hired and we fell out of the rankings was that Dave "left the cupboard bare" when he left, well that is no longer a valid excuse. The other excuse for our fall from the national rankings was that because we are considered a "mid-major" that makes it difficult to recruit and my response to that is that there are other mid-majors that are ranked every year so IMHO there is no reason why we can't still be ranked with our history, volleyball culture, facilities, and attendance. Hawaii should be the top ranked mid-major year in and year out. We shouldn't settle for less than that. I actually think that Covid and the Big West screwed Hawaii over and killed the momentum.

Hawaii should be the top ranked mid-major year in and year out. We shouldn't settle for less than that. Ah Mow is an excellent coach in the gym and game time. The problem has been recruiting mainly, then communication with media and fans. Shoji hung around too long, talented young coaches under him left, the recruiting trail was getting cold and other schools were dominating and on the rise, finally the writing was on the wall and he retired. Living in the past and failing to admit how the recruiting landscape has changed, you'll constantly be disappointed in the now. Ah Mow needs an Angelica type around. But of a younger generation that can handle today's social media landscape, that's at ease in front of a camera, that can be an engaging face to the program with the media, fans, and on the recruiting trail. In the gym coaching skill would almost be secondary. The current staff is capable enough in that regard. I think we're long past the age when a head coach could simply delegate some significant portion of the duties to a capable younger coach. The current era requires a more significant degree of engagement in all areas. In this case, Robyn's aversion to communication and PR are too extreme to mask or paper over. She simply has to learn how to engage better, as uncomfortable as it may be for her. I think she can make some improvement if she made her mind up.

Getting a new coach? That's so silly. Robyn has gotten the team to post season every year she was HC. She runs a clean program and the kids on the team are great kids.
Ranking is something out of her hand. So is being in the Big West. She is doing the best with what she has. I don't think any other coach coming from the outside and doing a better job. Maybe a guy like men's coach Charlie Wade or former men assistant Josh Walker but outsiders will have a tougher time.
As for assistant, I don't have an issue with Baxter. He coached volleyball long enough to be competent. Castello can be replaced.

But maybe having Milan on staff for a couple of years at that point helped on the recruiting front. 🤔 2016 was when they had that monster freshman class and those recruits didn't make too much of a splash till the following season. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It's no coincidence that we were ranked every year (except the injury plagued 1992 season) up until Robyn was hired and since then we've only been ranked 1 time in the last 7 years! Yes, the landscape has changed including recruiting blah blah blah, but like I said above, if other mid-majors like BYU, Dayton, San Diego, Rice and Western Kentucky to name a few, can be good enough to be ranked then we should be too. With our history, volleyball culture, facilities, and attendance, Hawaii should be the top ranked mid-major year in and year out. I'm getting kind of tired of the "it is what it is" BS from some fans with their endless excuses for why we are not nationally relevant anymore like we should just accept it. I've said this before and I'll repeat it again, the downhill trajectory of our program is not something we as fans should be OK with. We CAN and SHOULD do better.

I don't think any girls from Hawaii were at the US NTDP this past Spring, even though Nick Castello was the scout assigned to the Aloha Region

You are very unrealistic in your expectations. The past is the past. Everything changed with the P4 getting filthy rich while schools like UH have to scrape for money. We cannot compete for recruits at the level like when Shoji was here. Those kids now would rather sit on the bench at other P4 schools and collect 50k NIL money. You think it’s so easy to repeat or duplicate what Dave did? He is a Hall of Fame coach. Even schools like USC and UCLA have a hard time following up on their successes off Mick Haley and Andy Banachowski. You make it sound like putting together a team worthy of national ranking a piece of cake. No AD is going to fire a coach who have gone to post season every season she was HC.

Speaking of P4 and NIL, know her name was floating around for 2026’s, but looks like we missed out on another one. Layli Ostovar to USC for indoor and beach. Definitely hard to compete with that P4 money. http://instagram.com/p/C8QwRP1RGcD That’s a shame considering what the recent head to heads have been between the two teams but yea like many have mentioned, it is very hard to compete with P4 money and allure

Both Kate and Anna had good talent and absolutely wanted to play for Hawaii. Both had Power 5 offers yet still ended up in Hawaii. If Hawaii can get at least 2 solid recruits like that each year then Wahine should be back in the Top 20. I guess Chalei and Mili are a similar duo?

But let me ask you a question: in what universe is it OK for a coach - in any sport, to take over a perennially ranked program to then take that program to the point where it's not ranked anymore and that's OK? Name ANY program where the fans would be OK with that. Also, do you have a reading comprehension problem? If you reread my comment you will see that I am comparing our program to other midmajors. How is it that other midmajors like BYU, Dayton, San Diego, Rice and Western Kentucky to name a few, can be good enough to be ranked and we can't?

For starters, those teams play in better overall conferences, which helps their RPI immensely. Hawai'i has to rely on developing a strong enough pre-season schedule to make up for the RPI hits that come from playing the weakest Big West teams (which is basically all of them.) Which Big West conference head coach is doing a better job than Robyn is? Long Beach spent tons more money on salaries than Hawai'i and hasn't had near the success that Robyn has. The Santa Barbara coach won the conference in his first season as head coach, but we'll have to see if he can keep up that level of quality. There are certainly a few things that Robyn can do better, and those issues have been discussed extensively. I agree that Robyn isn't necessarily the best equipped person to really push the program to the top in things like NIL, fan engagement, fund-raising, but the coach that might be able to do that isn't necessarily also the best coach in the technical and training aspects either. Do you really think the UH Administration is prepared to do what it takes to find that person? I just don't see it happening.

In a universe where Long Beach State, Santa Barbara, and Pacific (RIP) were also perennially top nationally ranked teams, it's obvious that Hawai'i is not the exception to the rule.

Well volleyguy I don't know what the volleyball RPI is of those conferences but my gut feeling is no, they are not better volleyball conferences but I'd be glad to take a look if you can provide the source for your claim that CUSA, Atlantic 10, the AAC and WCC (maybe) are better volleyball conferences than the Big West. And yes, there have been teams in our conference that were perennially ranked and I am sure that their fans are not happy about it. Why should they be? That's my point, I don't want our program to be another LBSU or even worse, Pacific. But you dodged my question once again: in what universe is it OK for a coach - in any sport, to take over a perennially ranked program to then take that program to the point where it's not ranked anymore and that's OK? Name ANY program of any sport where the fans would be OK with that.
