Yes, they are objectively better conferences, including volleyball conferences (because they have football). In a universe where Long Beach State, Santa Barbara, and Pacific (RIP) were also perennially top nationally ranked teams, it's obvious that Hawai'i is not the exception to the rule. Well volleyguy I don't know what the volleyball RPI is of those conferences but my gut feeling is no, they are not better volleyball conferences but I'd be glad to take a look if you can provide the source for your claim that CUSA, Atlantic 10, the AAC and WCC (maybe) are better volleyball conferences than the Big West. And yes, there have been teams in our conference that were perennially ranked and I am sure that their fans are not happy about it. Why should they be? That's my point, I don't want our program to be another LBSU or even worse, Pacific. But you dodged my question once again: in what universe is it OK for a coach - in any sport, to take over a perennially ranked program to then take that program to the point where it's not ranked anymore and that's OK? Name ANY program of any sport where the fans would be OK with that. Nobody is dodging your question. It is a question with an obvious answer. Why do you think asking it (repeatedly) is making some significant point? Of course everyone wants to win, especially if you've won before. The question that you don't seem to have an answer for is how you think Hawai'i can achieve this success. The Big West doesn't have football, but Hawai'i does. And they can't get their football stadium situation resolved and have unique and immense geographical issues to contend with that other schools in football conferences don't have. Nobody cares about your "gut" feeling. If you don't understand that some instituions in those other conferences are better positioned to be successful in volleyball, then you don't know what you're talking about.

"The question that you don't seem to have an answer for is how you think Hawai'i can achieve this success." Do you have a reading comprehension problem too? I've said in my previous comment that I'd like to see a new coaching staff take over if RAM can't turn things around in the next couple of years. And regarding your claim that the CUSA, Atlantic 10, the AAC and WCC are better volleyball conferences, you can't provide proof for your claim that those conferences are better volleyball conferences and yet you say "nobody cares about your "gut" feeling."? Well what are you basing your claim on? YOU'RE the one making that claim so what are you basing that claim on?

High expectations is one thing, but if you don’t have the means to meet those expectations then your expectations become unrealistic.
You can expect your child to be a top level setter in college but if that kid does not have the natural ability or the work ethic to be that top level setter, then it’s best you adjust your view.
To say the previous coach did this and the current coach should be able to do it too and match his results is not real life.
You think Michael Jordan is disappointed in his kid because he was unable to match his success? Or that LeBron James will be disappointed in Bronny if he isn’t on the path of becoming a superstar?
Shoji had been a HC for 40 plus years. Robyn is 7 years in. You are out of your mind.

And I also didn't say they were better volleyball conferences, I said that they were conferences that allowed some institutions to have better volleyball programs because they are actual football conferences (don't forget that you mentioned specific schools in those conferences that had better success, not the conferences). Who has the reading comprehension problem? Hawai'i left the Big West for the WAC around the time that the BW became a California conference and non-football conference. They continued to have success in volleyball in the WAC, and then they decided to come back to the Big West. These decisions were all centered around football primarily, in both positive and negative contexts. *btw I don't think you're out of your mind, as brooselee suggests. I think your understanding of how good programs are created and maintained is weak.

Normally if a coach takes over a perennially ranked program and oversees that programs slide into national irrelevancy that coaches days are numbered. Why should Robyn be any different? That's all I'm saying. "You can expect your child to be a top level setter in college but if that kid does not have the natural ability or the work ethic to be that top level setter, then it’s best you adjust your view." not sure your analogy works but are you saying that Robyn is not up to the job ("does not have the natural ability or the work ethic") and you're ok with that? And again so you get it, I AM NOT COMPARING ROBYN TO DAVE. I AM COMPARING ROBYN AND HOW SHE'S RUNNING HER PROGRAM TO OTHER MIDMAJORS THAT ARE HAVING SUCCESS AND ARE GETTING RANKED WHILE WE ARE NOT. Get it straight.

Complain, complain and complain. When the arguments get heated, resort to Blah, Blah Blah. Great!

I would rather sell that then tell your recruits that we were ranked 15rh for two weeks in 2022 or some lame achievement like that.

You said earlier that "For starters, those teams play in better overall conferences, which helps their RPI immensely. Hawai'i has to rely on developing a strong enough pre-season schedule to make up for the RPI hits that come from playing the weakest Big West teams" So I understood that to mean you were talking about volleyball since that's what it sounds like. And thanks for the reminder history lesson. I already knew that since I've been a Men's & Women's volleyball and Football season ticket holder since I moved back to Hawaii in 1987 after going to college and working on the mainland.

Thank you for that. I stand corrected. The above four conferences in 2023 were better RPI conferences for women's volleyball than the Big West, by a lot not a little. About half of the Big West are perennial RPI bottom dwellers that are an RPI hit even when you beat them. To be AVCA ranked, Big West teams need to make a big splash in the non-conference part of their schedule, then basically win out in the Big West.
