Yeah, I forgot about Marley. Another year of experience and strengthening will pay dividends too. She and Hannah can seriously elevate. I like Markley, she's an excellent blocker, but she'll have a tough time beating out Jurevicius unless she puts on a little muscle and hits harder.

On Another topic, How are we going to be able to watch the first Match On Aug 30 at Tenn? I don't see any reference to a video or even audio.

ESPN and its properties (ACC, SEC Nets) haven't announced their TV schedules yet I don't think (last year, they did so on Aug 15)...hopeful that the Tennessee, Kentucky and Pitt matches will be on regular TV, but I'm sure they will all be streaming at least.

I think this team *can* be better than it was last year, but it probably won't. Still too many moving parts. It's going to take this year plus next year until we're back into a normal operating rhythm without having to rely so, so much on new transfers every year.

I think the days of relying solely on recruiting are over. Any coach that wants to be successful had better be prepared to “recruit” transfers as a dynamic part of their roster build. The teams will always have key players transfer out unexpectedly. You have to be prepared to replace them with transfers since you may not have a recruit ready to step in and fill that spot.

Hancock appears to have taken the brunt of the crash… Larson escaped with slight injuries, Hancock actually looks like she was in a car that hit a pole… #paris 🙏4both

Didn't say you had to rely solely on recruiting. But did say you can't rely on transfers more than recruiting. Across several NCAA sports, it's become evident that over-reliance on transfers (either on purpose or out of necessity) compared to high school recruiting is not a recipe for success.

Holy crap! I hope they're both okay despite the surface injuries.

Watched a replay of last year’s Wisconsin’s match and started doing a mental comparison between Izzy Starck and Mac Podraza bearing in mind the little bit I’ve seen of Izzy. This is not intended to disparage either player, just observational from a guy who has watched a lot of volleyball.
1. Both Izzy and Mac are very good at setting, however, I noticed Mac is a little inconsistent when she sets behind her. She’s very good when setting forward and can send a faster set easily when it’s needed. Izzy seems a lot more consistent front or back. Both are very good at handling what are not the best of passes. I give Izzy a very slight edge in setting.
2. Mac really improved her serving at Penn State but it was still challenging. At Ohio State, her serving was very problematic, having lots of troubles just getting it in. Izzy has a pretty good float serve with the ability to get it where she wants. I give Izzy a pretty big edge in serving.
3. Mac is adequate with defense, but seems a little resistant to dive to the floor if needed. Izzy goes after everything she has to and is very good defensively. Watched her at the under armor all star game that is played after the national championship and the network announcer even commented on her setting and her strong defense. I give Izzy the edge in defense.
4. Mac is a very good blocking setter. It’s one of her strongest attributes. I haven’t seen enough of Izzy to evaluate her blocking, but at 6’-1”, she should at least be pretty decent. Since they had two setters at the all star game, Izzy (who was a captain), chose to let the other setter play the front row, Izzy subbed in when the other setter rotated to the back row, so she didn’t have any blocking opportunities. I give Mac the edge in blocking.
During that under armor game, Ava Falduto played libero the whole match. She was pretty outstanding.
I think we’ll see a lot of Alexa Markley and Caroline Jurevicious on the right side. I ultimately think Caroline will win the spot, but Alexa makes a very capable and experienced sub for any of the pin positions. She can handle a lot swings. I think her biggest challenge is getting away from trying to power every shot through the block. She needs to mix up her shot selection. I also believe Caroline will also try to power everything through, but her power may work a little better. She hits a very heavy ball.
I think Maggie Mendelson will be one of the starting middles and she will shine. Her basketball skills should help her develop a strong slide shot. The approach is just like a basketball layup. While she hasn’t played much in game time, she’s certainly played a lot in practice over two years against very strong opponents. I think playing basketball kept her off the radar for volleyball at Nebraska. Concentrating on volleyball at PSU will allow her to reach her full potential. If she struggles early, Jordan Hoppe is very accomplished middle as a backup. She is an excellent addition. I saw her play in a match against Houston last year. Houston was ranked pretty high at the time. Hoppe was unstoppable. Houston had no answer for her.

The match with Tennessee will be broadcast on ESPNU on Friday, August 30, not the 31st just to clear that up. I have nothing to base this on, but the temple match may go the way of ESPN+. I’m pretty excited for this season to start. I just think they’re going to surprise a lot of people.

Those first four matches will be big. I think if Penn State can come away at least 3-1, it will be a great start to the season.
