Didn’t she give up the multi sport this year to just focus all her attention on VB now? She was playing basketball at Nebraska to correct ? her scholarship at NU was actually a basketball scholarship. When she transferred to Penn she got a volleyball one so can just focus on volleyball.

I expected them to play well and be competitive. But wow, they have far exceeded my expectations.
1. Izzy took all of one set (against Tennessee) to get pretty acclimated to the college game. She’s only going to get better from here with experience and playing time.
2. Grimes and Falduto in the backcourt along with A. Starck or Jess have been superb in serve/receive and passing in general. They’ve consistently given balls to Izzy that she can dish out to anyone she wants. I saw the earlier posts of liberos where Grimes was within 2 points of the top spot at 2.50. What is not shown is Falduto in the Tennessee match passing at 2.73! Not sure how she did in the last two, but it was pretty darn good.
3. As I thought, Maggie’s basketball skills are starting to help her on that slide. She’s getting faster and more fluid the more she does it. She’s going to be unstoppable by season’s end.
4. CJ is turning into that beast I thought she would. Wow has she got power.
5. The most important item of note to me is team chemistry. The difference between the last couple years of Russ’s teams and now is striking. The difference between the Tennessee match and the Louisville match is very notable. Success is rapidly building this team’s chemistry.
The temple match was really beneficial in that it showed the real depth of this squad. If anyone should be out of commission for a bit of time, the team will be fine at any position. KSC and staff have built a great team. before the season started, I was hoping for at least a 3-1 start, but expected maybe 2-2. 1-3 wouldn’t have been a good start. 4-0 looks like a real possibility now.

Perhaps an unimportant fact for most, but Kristin Carpenter's husband (a Penn State Wrestling alum) was recently hired as the NIL Director for Penn State Wrestling. gopsusports.com/staff/clay-steadmanHopefully this means we'll get to see more of her on broadcasts, or just around Rec Hall. Is it just me or does Jess look like she has improved a lot this year? Many of their players are hitting the ball very well with authority. I wonder if Megan is having an effect of them on coaching staff. She was a terminal pin. I remember watching her and teams knew where it was going and they still couldn’t stop her Teams used to focus their blocking on Jess and could successfully shut down PSU's offense. I think Jess is benefited greatly from the addition of Jurevicious. Opposing blockers can no longer focus on her. Also, Hannah's improved play has helped a lot. Of course, I have to mention Izzy's setting; she has been nothing short of phenomenal. I'm in awe! All that starts with the smalls, however, who are passing nails and giving Izzy the ability to distribute the ball anywhere on court. In summary, I think it's an entire team effort that is contributing to Jess' success this season.

Her swing seems to have a greater range of motion than last season. Also, she seems to be getting more elevation on her approaches.

Thanks for pointing that out Boof1224. I incorrectly thought the list was only liberos. This shows why the PSU backcourt has provided Izzy with such a great setting base.
If everyone recalls, Cam seemed to struggle a little in the first half of last year. Her second half was much better as she acclimated to the physical play in the BIG. She doesn’t have that “breaking in” period this year. But yes, I think her shot selection and overall skill set has improved. I think Jess’s has as well with both of them hitting higher percentages. Again, the benefit of good serve/receive and associated setting that gives them more one on one blocking opportunities. It all starts with the passing. The littles don’t get near enough credit.

Well... that happened.
Was not expecting that. Like, at all.

Joe Paterno used to tell the media of his teams in the pre season that they are never as good or as bad as it seems. In my long history of coaching all sorts of sports while my kids were growing, I found that to be one of the real truisms.
I’m not sure where all your negativity comes from Jag, but most of what you talked about seemed to revolve around emotions and not the facts laid out in front of you. While I somewhat agreed with your analysis about all the new pieces, the other facts, to me, were pretty compelling as well. Putting it all together, I saw wins over Tennessee and temple. Louisville would be a real challenge, but it was at rec hall, making that somewhat of an equalizer. The Kentucky match might be difficult, so to me 2-2 was a minimum and one over either Louisville or Kentucky makes 3-1 possible.
They far exceeded my expectations and look pretty polished at this point in the season.

I think a successful season this year (final four) could work wonders for recruiting within the coming years. I love the 2025 and 2026 classes that KSC is forming but I think the opportunity to play with CJ Izzy and Ava could be huge selling point for hitters

KSC has been an amazing coach so far. To replace someone like russ rose is SUCH a burden and hard shoes to fill but shes done it beautifully.
Shes going to be so fun to watch for a long time.

Even though I prefer to see home grown talent, I was thinking KSC could pickup a good pin transfer next season, but I don't know PSU's scholarship situation.

KSC will never abandon the portal, unless she wishes to be the Dabo Swinney of NCAA Women's Volleyball. I'm sure she will accurately identify needs and target those portal players who can fill the needs.

There's no need or reason to abandon the portal... but relying less on it is generally preferable.
