A middle and back up setter are their biggest needs right now.

Penn State no longer focuses on player development. That went out the door with the winningest coach in college volleyball history.

How much history does Hodge have in developing pin hitters? None to my knowledge but Cam seemed to be ALOT more effective once she moved to the left side and i saw many times where she sat with Hodge after leaving the court

I mean... she's the Megan Hodge Being a great player does not necessarily make one a great coach. I'm not saying Megan isn't good, but this is a common logical fallacy amongst fans: they somehow assume because a player was great that they can teach others to be great. This isn’t a logical fallacy. I only brought it up because i saw how much Cam improved JUST last season. She was our best pin hitters at times last season and that can be attributed to the staff, i chose Hodge to focus on because she seemed to be the one that worked with her during games

Penn State no longer focuses on player development. That went out the door with the winningest coach in college volleyball history. When RR left two years ago, the entire senior class transferred or left in some capacity. Fitzpatrick transferred. Multiple recruits flipped commitment including Chloe Chicoine. That’s what happens when you lose your long time head coach. There was literally no setter on the roster and only 8 players left on the team. Penn State did what they had to do and they brought in transfers and made the season work. The 2023 recruits were understandably lacking, because again, they lost their head coach of 40+ years and were filled with uncertainty. Again, Penn State did what they had to do, and they brought in transfers to fill where they needed help. Now heading into 2024, we have two good (much better than the last 3 years of RR career) recruiting classes, a promising transfer in CJ (for FOUR years) and multiple players (Grimes, Mruzik, Markley, Starck, Hannah) ready to build off their prior seasons. Penn State needs time to get back to where they were but they are making really great progress. They have made the unfortunate situation work and KSC and crew have and will continue to show that they can recruit out of high school and transfers, and that they can develop players. Take your negativity out of our Penn State thread because it doesn’t belong here!! I have so much optimism for 2024!!

The current staff is recruiting transfers who are looking for a better opportunity. Many are veteran players with polish. I’m waiting to see who makes progress under the current staff? Stark? Markley?

Our only options then would be Cam & Alexa. Which after this season Cam has shown she's very talented in the OH position, she should continue to train and develop there to build consistency. That leaves Markley as the lone option for the RS, you could say Starck, but if I'm correct I don't think she's ever played there in her 3 years at PSU. I'm sure then, people like you would have all sorts of complaints about coaching staff not doing enough.

Penn state created an impossible level to stay at year after year. They were gonna fall at some point and face a big rebuild. They lost the winningest coach in womens volleyball history. They had lost a step in his last few years and i think it was time. KSC was a unestablished as a coach and i think after a few years she has done a pretty good job. We will know in these next couple years her potential with the recruits she gets. Theres always a turnover after former coach leaves of who was recruited by them and who the new coach. Im giving her a chance cause she has suprised my expectations so far

I’m just curious as to who is training them up. Who trains the setters? The leftsides? The passers?

Markley? Transfers need to be developed as well. Each of the transfers Penn State has brought in the past two years have improved - Some more, some less, but all noticeably. As for non-transfers - Grimes winning the libero shirt this season is development. Holland, though she didn't have as successful of a season this year, was 1st team B1G last year despite not being a big name out of high school. Trammel has improved tremendously, especially considering her injury last year. Starck, though not playing the position she was recruited for, has carved a new role for herself, and has improved her skills in the backrow - especially when it comes to passing. As for others we don't see often in matches like Markley - Just because we don't see them doesn't mean they're not being developed. Just the tough reality of limited starting positions.
