You're making stuff up now. I had to go look - Thompson got a pretty good runout in 2019, hitting .290 in 241 attempts. Is that "lighting it up"? I don't know - Bergmann had a similar runout for Brazil in 2022 and got 2nd team AVCA, so take from that what you will. But if you use previous summer's national team success as your main qualifier, then Asjia O'Neal should win in a slam dunk in 2023 and there is no one close. Let me know when Asija O’Neal saved USA’s @ss at the Olympic Qualifier like Jordan Thompson did (and that was a qualification year where it DID matter, if they lost that match, it would have set up a USA-DOM playoff match win or go home for an Olympic spot, which….. would not have been a guarantee). But also JT put up an absolute monstrous match to help eliminate China at the actual OG, but true that was a little later, USA could have been dicey in the pool of death without Jordan putting up 10 kills per set.

Of course, National Team stats are also not relevant to the award. In 2018 Thompson had great stats but her team was 13-19 and didn't qualify for the Tournament. In 2019, Thompson's stats improved a bit more over 2018 and her team lost in the 2nd round to #14 Marquette. I think a stronger case can be made for 2019 as the season Thompson was "robbed" but there was also quite a bit of hype for Pressley as a future Olympian as well (which obviously didn't pan out). You have your years mixed up. In 2018, JT’s team lost to Marquette. The 2019 year they beat Pitt, who could have hosted a regional. In 2017, the year you reference about not making the tournament, JT missed the season due to injury.

As much as I love Sarah Franklin . Her resume isn't as good as Madi's . This one sided poll result must be taking into account too many program haters, or player STANs to produce a fitting result. I chose Sarah Franklin. Personally, I like her game a little better than I do Madi's. Madi was incredible last week and is deserving as well. She has the "wow" factor that can be appreciated by knowledgeable volleyball fans and casual sports fans alike. She can overwhelm a team through sheer power and athleticism. In my opinion, Sarah has a slightly more well-rounded game. Serving is about even. On offense, she can tank right through you, but she has other tools that many smaller pin attackers have, like tooling the edge and turning high line, and I've loved her roll shots, how she executes them, and overall how she manages her offense in and out of system (hence being slightly more efficient). We've all seen that devastating sharp angle shot! She has fewer kills than Madi, but she's also playing in a 6-2 that is much more balanced than the Longhorns. On defense, I think that Sarah is a slightly better floor defender. I believe she sometimes passes in a two-man serve receive as well. To note, I think that Madi is a slightly better blocker, and, to her credit, she's made strides in serve receive (by the eye test) and floor defense. No matter who wins the NPOY this year, I will be happy! Side note: My sleeper/dark horse pick for this award is Rachel Fairbanks. Asjia O'Neal isn't completely out of the question either.

I looked up the stats in the right years, but called up the wrong corresponding schedules.

Question. WIll voters be willing to hand Texas 2 NPOYs in a row? Especially, when Wisconsin is looking very dominant ATP & likely to win it all.

I've only seen Skinner during the tournament, during which she was amazing. I doubt that such granular statistics are available, but I'd love to see a breakdown for Skinner and Franklin between out of system kills and in-system. Skinner's ability to get kills against Stanford, one of the best blocking teams in the country, on all sorts of scramble plays left me stunned. Stanford, too.
Is this what you're looking for?

The coaches/schools submit nominations and a short video to the AVCA in support of their All America nominations. There is a deadline for this (early December), and there have been a small number of times when coaches or SID’s missed the deadline and cost a player a nomination. There is no nomination process for NPOY. The two awards are voted on at the same time, but the AA are announced before the Final Four because the athletes are expected to be in attendance at the Banquet which takes on the Friday between the semis and finals. The NPOY is announced at the Banquet. In earlier years, the AVCA publicly stated that the awards committee would meet after the semis to finalize their choice, but I think that went away in the mid-2000’s.

Did Asia O'Neal average over 6 kills per set in any season while hitting over .330? Thompson did it in back-to-back seasons in 2018 and 2019.

Yeah, no kidding. If we go by her college numbers, she was basically the volleyball version of Barry Sanders. Her kills per set on an extremely high hitting percentage dwarfed everyone else. The argument against Thompson was that she played in a weaker conference. But it's hard to make the argument that the Big Ten or Pac-12 are tougher opposition than senior international teams, lol. And as trojan pointed out, you don't even have your facts right. Not surprised. The thing that was especially annoying about the Thompson snubs (particularly in 2019, though I can safely say she was the best player in 2018 as well) was that she lost to players who played the same position and had worse stats but better teammates. If she lost to setters, that would be different.

In fact, I never argued that Thompson didn't deserve to be named NPOY. But there's also a long history of the best player or the player with the best stats not being NPOY. THe AVCA's mission is to promote the college sport on behalf of coaches, and that is often exactly what they do.

Anyway, I don't have a strong opinion on Skinner v. Franklin. If we're going just by points and hitting percentage, I'd go Skinner.
