Federal judge in West Virginia just issued a 14-day TRO negating the NCAA's one time transfer exception. This seems to mean athletes can now transfer more than once and have immediate eligibility.

Does this mean the "Wild West" just got wilder?

How many SAs would this affect, practically?
They already can transfer once as an undergrad, and a second time as a grad transfer. And that's on top of the 'coaching change' and 'loss of scholarship' exceptions.

And that's on top of the 'coaching change' and 'loss of scholarship' exceptions. All of them, really. The number of kids who have transferred once but haven't graduated has to be in the thousands (across all sports). For example, there's a kid at our local school who transferred in after her freshman year and I'm pretty sure she's miserable as a junior. She can't leave yet because she doesn't have a degree. If this ruling is applied across the country, she could be in the portal and somewhere else next semester.

It’s a dumb rule that was never going to hold under even the mildest of scrutiny.
I get the appeal of it for coaching staffs, but it’s just one of the many ways the NCAA has no real jurisdiction to enforce any kind of rules that might help with competitive equity without congressional legislation.
I’ve been saying for a while the NCAA was never going to be able to enforce the one time transfer rule. Now here we are.

If we don't prevent standard students or employees from transferring as desired, why do we prevent student-athletes?

At this point they might as well make scholarships for 1 year. Schools should also be able to decide if they want to move on.

They're not going to enforce it, globally.

You act surprised. This is the way it was always going to be. The NCAA has very little authority to enforce much of anything regarding the transfer of players or how they'll be paid through NIL. Nor the amounts. Every time they try even a little it gets swatted down.
