Ironic that a west coast match is being posted by a person from the mid-west (Kansas City)! Any chance you have a UCLA-USC score?

robertmotley - Glad you did not see this match my friend – I would have run out of towels for your tears. The good news is we will have a good battle for 1st place in the Big West. Have not seen stats on Crimes yet – she is the key to LBSU winning or loosing.

Kuddos to Dutra and company, you made LBS look even worse than ever thought possible, your setting was amazing, must be nice to have all those great passers behind you... Great job Santa Barbara, you made us look like we need to go back to class, especially blocking 101. You served us right off the court, in fact we served ourselves right off the court.

They also actually have "SETTERS" as well as passers! The LBS setting is the weakest part of our overall game right now, with no real improvement in sight unfortunately!

Pretty hard to set, when you can't get a pass, even though that is NO excuse, Dutra did however get some great passes, she also put up some great sets with crappy passes, which were far and few between. There was enough blame to go around for the whole team, it was a collective effort by all the LBS girls that played, stinky serving, really stinky passing and yes poor setting. I think our hitters actually deserved a little more credit, because Santa Barbara was picking up everything that we were putting down, and some of it was really good. It makes our hitting% look worse than it was. Most importantly anybody who watched the game saw that we couldn't block, and they threw up some tight blocks. We were blocking mostly one on one, which I do not know what the reason for that is, and or not at all. When you have big girls right there on the hit, and they leave holes big enough to drive a truck through, then you are gona give up alot of kills, and or get some even worse passing if the back row gets a hand on it. So please do not throw this all on the setter. Even though, she could have had more vision aboutwho to set at different times, she did set into the block alot, but shouldn't there be better communication going on so she might know where the block is. The coach calls for back-row attack, when you have Crimes in the middle, that is not the setters fault, why would you do that? When all you have to do is set Alexis up and over the block in the middle, because we all know that she can get up over any body. She doesn't need to be set the quick, because that is lately very blockable, probably because it has been very predictable. Back row attack, when the attacker fails to barely leave the ground... Not very smart in my mind... There was know tooling going on by the outsides, Brian had them taking there approaches from the stands, how readable is that? I am telling you times are a changing, coaches are smarter, there are smarter players collectively on the floor, and you have to be watching what is going on all the time. Blocking is paramount for the future, if you got stud blocking, tight together, then you have a chance without blocking LBS will be in the toilet so to speak, because from what I have seen thus far we are being scouted very well, and only a few of our hitters know how to change it up. But, all opposing hitters do not have to worry thus far, about changing it up because all they have to do is swing and it goes right through two or three sets of hands. What is wrong with that picture? Remember I said through, not over or around but through..... Hey did I even mention that any shots dropped in the middle, did just that, they dropped. Who is responsible for that coverage anyway? Or is it just a free shot for the opposing team? Because opposing teams seem to have someone who covers the old dink a roo.....Doesn't somebody have that job assignment on the court, and if they do I hope they are not paying them. I give Santa Barbara credit for really good serving, but hey why not make some adjustments or substitute, because they served it to the same spot every time, thus the shank or the over-pass, or the crappy pass, BLA, Bla,Bla, Lets give credit where credit is due, The coach was part of this loss, because obviously some of the players can screw up as much as possible, and still have a job, while others get the old boot and know matter how hard they work they can't get back in and have another chance. When you talk about heart I think this is where you lose it. There is zero leadership on the floor right now, because if there was they would have pulled themselves out, at least to see what the heck was wrong, this goes for almost every player that was on the floor, but still there is know leadership. I say bring out the red shirts, Lets go for it!!!!!

beachter1, What is funny is if you look at many of my pre-last weekend posts, they are almost identical to your's. (Except that I use "no" as opposed to "know". ) I also never would have thought, prior to Friday night, that anyone would have been talking about my Gauchos in those terms, so I do empathize.

Long Beach talent is "scary". When they are on their game, they can play with anyone. If Long Beach plays their "best" and UCSB plays their "best" I think the 49ers win. Fortunately, we seem to bring out the worst in CSLBU I thought Cal Poly looked really good against the Gauchos, but Long Beach killed them. It's a weird year in the Big West. Teams are capable of playing really poorly one week and then really well the next. I don't think that there is an "easy" match for anyone this year.

I have watched Long Beach since 2001 and find their play to be very predictable. Each year they have great athletes and good players, but their creativity is completely stifled. They are coached, through fear and intimidation, to play the "system". Some commentators have interpreted this as breaking them down so they can be rebuilt into better players. I don't see that. Tara, Antoinette and Misty would have been great wherever they went to school. Cheryl and Elisha would have been fantastic elsewhere too.
Those shots dropped in the middle? That's been happening ever since I first saw Long Beach play. It's so obvious it's happening but no coaching adjustments seem to be made to stop it. Its like the system comes first, regardless of the athletes or the opposition. That 2001 team should have won NCAAs. That they did not is a major failure. The system was out-smarted by free-flowing players who were given the freedom to improvise and to respond to situations.
The rigidity extends to use of personnel. During the past 4 years, whenever a certain player has been on the floor, the team has never failed to lose its chemistry, and that person has been too quick to blame other players for her mistakes, and chew them out on the floor. Ironically that player, when injured, seems much happier playing cheerleader on the sidelines, than playing volleyball on the court. If you don't play, you don't get yelled at and you can relax and have fun. Yet that player gets to play while other, better, players languish on the sidelines wondering why they ever came here in the first place.
As a famous Olympic coach I know says: "Question yourself before you question your athletes."
