My one reservation is the kid's size, but her little mom was pretty good IIRC. Maybe I'm wrong, but aren't most setters on the international level around 5'8"-5'11"? Why the panic to have tall setters? Dana Burkholder, Courtney Thompson, -help me out, who else-are somewhat "vertically challenged", but who cares? Nicole Vargas is listed at 5'8". If she's as good as her mom and 4 inches taller, I say stick with her.

Interesting and insightful analysis PierreAmi, I think you have touched a nerve. The "system" has fallen behind the times. So many girls now come to college with many polished skills, it is up to the coaching staff to look for that "chemistry" and get the right mix on the floor for maxium results. This is obviously not happening. As far as setting, get use to it. This is what's in store for the next four years. Too bad for all the great hitters on this team. You got to be like totally out-there, I read your post, and if I am not mistaken it read ."Too bad for all you great hitters". How is one suppose to interpret that/ Help me I 'm so confused. Let us all take a minute of silence, because I just think you might be giving the a pep talk. Hey ! Well at least it positive in a negative sort of way.

Sorry, Gymbratt, I did not understand the last part of your post, "you might be giving the a pep talk. Hey! Well at least it positive in a negative sort of way"

No LamB I am sorry, I think I do not even know what I meant. I do think I was trying to get something positive out there though! Bottom line is , I hope that the LBS team can grow-up a little and get better, I think there is a lot more at the core than is in the public's eye. Lots of girls sitting on the bench, older, younger, injuried, not injuried. It is always hard to get the chem thing going. Because there is alot of talent there. Someone needs to just find the right key...

if the girls on the bench want more playing time - they need to continuosly mention to brian on how great his hair is that day - oh but without touching the fragile imported rug though

Not sure what to make of your post here. Injuries are a part of this game and short of giving these kids a polygraph it is pretty difficult to know what injuries or injury related problems that they had throughout their Jr. careers. Natalie came to LBS injured and has remained in that condition, at some degree, since that time. Surgeries, tons of physical therapy, etc. haven't made her healthy enough to play at a high level. Maybe in some programs, ie D2 etc. that is possible, but not at our level....You live and learn and the coaching staff at LBS has surely experienced something less than optimum.....the real question in my mind here is how much has it hurt the program and how quickly will re recover. Actually we are about as healthy right now as any team that I can recall at LBS at this time of the season. Lots of vb left to play but with the exception of Natalie, no one on this team has suffered any really serious injury this season...knock on wood!

I would like to respond to what Beachman had to say. This is Natalie who plays for Long Beach State and I would to make a few things clear. I never get on this but I heard someone was saying some things that are NOT true about me. For the record, I did NOT come to Long Beach injured. As a matter of fact, I was the strongest in my life before I came here. I did not come here injured. Let me fill you in on a few things...when I came here, we were low on middles. We were limited on people my freshman year and everyone would admit, I took way to many repetitions, as well as everyone else. I ended up tearing my patellar tendon and had surgery. I rehabbed for about seven months and now I have stress fractures. I have been going to a specialist and she has been working with me. She said that if I didn't get hurt my freshman year, I wouldn't be having any of these problems. Once again, let me make this clear. I did not come here injured. Brian has told people that I came here injured. Well, he doesn't know what he is talking about. Before I got here, I worked out with my personal trainer and I was the strongest I've ever been. His name is Scott Moody and he would be glad to clear everything up. Maybe if our strength workouts were a little more vigorous, we would be healthy. Hmmm...that's a concept. But I will make this clear one more time. I did NOT come here injured and I don't appreciate people opening their mouth when they don't know the facts. Maybe people should get their facts straight before they go blabbin' on this.

This is a response to Beachman about Natalie. I don't know where you get your info, but it is inaccurate. Prior to going to LB Natalie had trained with a personal trainor at Sports Performance in Overland Park, KS. His name was Scott Moody. She trained 2-3 days a week year round, and was extremely strong because he knew how to train athletes. He worked her all around, upper and lower body strength training, agility, endurance, and jump training. She was healthy under his supervision in program. Brian doesn't believe in this kind of strength training. If you read Natalie's bio on the LB website you will read that she was a 2 time Kansas Gatorade player of the year, Fab 50, #3 recruit, All-American, and made Big West Freshman team. She couldn't accomplish this if she were injured. Her medical records are proof that she was healthy when she arrived at LB. There are a lot of injuries at LB! Seem to me that something is very wrong there. As for no chemistry on the team. Maybe. .. But when fear and intimidation is the LB strategy, what do you expect? Who wants to be told that they should be dragged back to LB behind the bus or even better yet, shot with a machine gun to be used as an example so that others would play with heart. This is an abusive and dysfunctional athletic environment.

I go to games, watch passively, and try to analyze the skills, tempo and team chemistry of the LB team. There is a great deal of talent, both mental and physical, on this team but the passion is not always there. It's like the players are not allowed to make decisions on the floor but act more like robots guided by some kind of code. The team can be very predictable and easy to defend against. I wonder if the players are allowed to play using their own intuition and skills. This is what makes great teams. Good coaching can bring the right talent to the floor but team chemistry is developed with trust and respect, between players and the coaching staff. I would love to see the team go out and play like they are having fun and don't want the match to end. If they can do this and stay healthy they can beat any opponent.

I normally try to keep an above board, positive out-look on things; but if this really happening at LBSU as soon as a new AD is appointed there will be recriminations.
