Wow, I did not now Schumacher was that high! Good! I hope Damrow is 100% and there is a great competition for back row rotations! I am confident in the next two classes, but I am interested to see what they do with the now open scholarship for the next two years! I hope Wrobel is healthy and does great for the Buckeyes against non Wisconsin teams!

Just a question: Why do we care about how incoming recruits are ranked as high school juniors & seniors? It's a ranking of their current ability/talent in a pool of high school players and doesn't assess potential among a pool of college players or how they will improve and adapt to a more physical, faster game. Sarah Franklin was #29 by Prepvb and remember Lexi Sun? Just 2 examples of how high school rankings may not be the best metric. It's hard to wait though until we see them in the red white scrimmage and tantalizing to speculate!

Would be super cool if we dubbed one of our 2024 home matches as , “international night” to honor our Polish, Canadian and Turkish girlies. Badgers will have 6 international players next season

It has been so exciting to watch underdog programs like Nebraska and Texas take off the radar recruits and turn them into national championship contenders. It’s like recruiting top players doesn’t even matter any more.

@sixpress I'm sorry if my post offended you. Wasn't trying to elicit a rude/sarcastic response, was trying to engage in a civil discussion rather than toxic rhetoric.

I'm not saying that recruiting top talent doesn't matter. I'm saying I don't think coaches evaluate and recruit based on these rankings-they exclude international players. and that they are not predictive of college performance.

Well, I can't speak for you, but we aren't coaches for the most part. Rather, we're observers or fans looking from outside the system trying to gauge our expectations. I think some of the rankings take into account the opinion of coaches - at least Tawa used to - so it's not like they are totally divorced from what coaches think. The rankings simply provide a window into how highly regarded these players are, and they are a useful PR tool for programs. You are right that international players (and transfers and NIL) change recruiting calculations a bit, but I don't think the rankings are aimed at coaches, and they are just one tool. The rankings are certainly not always right, but provide a good broad overview that sets expectations. The degree to which players meet expectations is a major source of discourse on this site. Would anyone have cared about Sun if she hadn't been top ranked? (Whether these rankings are good for the mental health of the athletes is another matter).

No, of course not, but a blanket statement that they are not predictive at all is false. I'm pretty sure if you look at the top 10/25 or so players of each year, the chances of those players becoming All-Americans are a lot higher than unranked players or players in 80s or 90s. It's not an exact science, but even in sports with tons more resources poured into recruiting like football or basketball, the rankings are nowhere near perfect either.

From the article: ***Madison Quest plans to enroll early at Wisconsin for the 2025 spring semester, which leaves that much of an overlap on campus with Franklin*** 👏🏼 And a quote from Quest, “ I will make it my goal when I get (to Wisconsin) to make sure that in every aspect of my game that I can prove myself to be a six-rotation player,” she said, “because that's what I enjoy doing and how I also think my talents are best. I think that I have a pretty good serve receive game, and that's something that I think gets you on the court”

@sixpress I'm sorry if my post offended you. Wasn't trying to elicit a rude/sarcastic response, was trying to engage in a civil discussion rather than toxic rhetoric. You didn't offend me. I consider sarcasm de rigueur for me. The truth is all programs are trying to maximize their talent acquisition. Including Wisconsin. The Badgers have been awesome at it, considering their placement in the Big 10 and their postseason success. But they're not purposefully going after lower ranked players. Sarah Franklin was one of the top portal players in the country the year she transferred from Michigan State. Same with Temi Thomas-Ailara, Carter Booth, and to a degree Caroline Crawford. Fuerbringer is the top setter in her class. Wisconsin is an extremely attractive destination for a lot of highly talented players, including high school talent, transfers, and international players. To me it's silly to dismiss rankings when it's obvious bringing in highly ranked classes - whether through high school or the portal - has a tremendously significant impact on the competitive landscape. Possibly the most significant.

What coaches don't know about their recruits is their work ethic in putting extra time into their training on top of their academics in high school (unless they ask; whether they're telling the truth is another thing), how high their true ceiling really is and if they reached their ceiling or not.

Sure - but does partial information help you predict the future? Yes. Think of it as playing Texas Hold 'Em. The recruiting info (videos, rankings, etc...) is 4 cards and the coach was able to peek at one or two more through interactions with the recruits and understanding their motivations, seeing them in-person, etc... The other cards all get flipped once the player gets to college. Can the 4 cards we see help us predict if the hand will be a good hand? Heck yes, but it won't tell us the whole picture. Prediction does not mean 100% accuracy, it just means likelihood to be correct is relatively high. But if a Texas Hold 'Em player went all in on a hand that they had a 90% chance of winning on, based on an accurate assessment of what they had and what they thought their opponent had, and lose because the last card flipped was unlucky, they will absolutely tell you their all in bet was a good bet, and just didn't work out. Their prediction was a good one, but the reality worked out differently. What's my point? 1) Recruiting rankings are definitely predictive - though some are of course better than others, as must be true with subjective evaluations. 2) Of course players come in and absolutely make their recruiting rankings look foolish - good or bad. And of course injuries happen. Predictions don't give you certainty, and that's okay.

Agreed, teams may get top recruits who turn out to be spuds with a plethora of reasons and the same thing with low ranked players who go on to be AAs. The higher the ranked recruit is, the higher (not guaranteed) chance they will be 1st team AA or even NPOY.
